vampire movies/myth
I'm not sure if anyone has made a thread about this, but I wouldn't mind asking fellow infected a few things:
1. what, in your opinion, makes a great vampire story ? what kind of contributes make it so ?
2. what types of myths about vampires have you heard, other than what is already wel known (garlic, sunlight, coffins etc) ?

I think any really good vampire story must somehow include the tragedy that is inherent in the notion of living a life of misery for eternity. So, for example, we have Kinsky's Nosferatu saying, "Time is an abyss... profound as a thousand nights... Centuries come and go... To be unable to grow old is terrible... Death is not the worst... Can you imagine enduring centuries, experiencing each day the same futilities..."

Re: vampire movies/myth
oh heck, I could talk for days and days on this subject. I have read books on vampires and watched vampire movies since I could remember.
I think what makes a good vampire story is less on the gore and campy cheesiness and more of the storyline.(also with a bit of humor). It's the human side in conflict with the vampiric nature, i.e Eli, Vlad (Gary Oldman) in Bram Stokers Dracula, Louis from Interview with a Vampire,or whenever Selma Hayek is the vampire.

I would echo that. A good vampire story is one where we feel sympathy for the vampire as a cursed creature. They must live the life of a monster, but they still possess the feelings of a human being. A sad, lonely existence.a_contemplative_life wrote:I think any really good vampire story must somehow include the tragedy that is inherent in the notion of living a life of misery for eternity.
I'll break open the story and tell you what is there. Then, like the others that have fallen out onto the sand, I will finish with it, and the wind will take it away.

ive noticed that there are the two groups of how people think of Vampires. theres, of course, what you all have mentioned as far as them still ahold of their human traits. ltroi is a prime example of that. then there is the ones, like lestat, who loves all that comes with being one. like the one vampire Eli ran into, who was like the one that changed her in the book
Re: vampire movies/myth
I have never like vampires. I think they are cold and calculating, but with Eli is different. She isn't out there killing for pleasure like in Polidori's The Vampyre in which innocent women get killed. Or like in Dracula who uses his powers to manipulate and control people to get what he wants.
Eli even herself says she is not a vampire and she only wants to live like the rest of the world. I haven't felt any sympathy for other vampires except for her. She like other have said retins her humanity among the horror that is her life.

what about Louis from interview with a vampire. he seems to have held on to his human morals. he never enjoyed killing and loved Claudia, who seemed to have to known him very well, despite the fact the she didnt care about killing humans like Louis

One thing that has always appealed to me about the vampire mythos is the "curse"; having incredible powers and near immortality coupled with such dire restrictions as sunlight and a warm liquid diet.
I'm always intrigued with each incarnation of the vampire to see how the character(s) embrace or revile the curse, how they justify or cope with it.
