That awkward moment when you're watching the movie and...

Post by Awes » Mon Apr 23, 2012 11:59 pm

After 2 weeks of searching I finally got my copy of the movie. I was watching it for the second time, and my mind was blown several times. I read the book after watching the movie for the first time, and somehow, it looks like I was mentally filling all the gaps in the movie with the scenes in the book.

I was watching the movie again, and it totally blew my mind in this 2 scenes:

The Egg. The goddamn egg. I was completly sure that the metallic egg was from the book, and the black one with golden stripes was from the movie. I have a crystalline image from that black egg :?

The music scene, when (in the book) Oskar gets mad, Eli gets nude in front of him, they argue, Elli gets a yellow dress and then Oskar tells her about Hakan. I knew that this scene wasn't in the movie, but it wasn't until I saw the movie that I realized I didnt watch it here.

But I'm convinced that I watched that scene somewhere. Maybe I dreamed it. Or probably Alzheimer.

I don't know what to trust

Any awkward moment for you?

I know what you mean, Awes.
Like you I saw the film first and then read the novel....which for me became a gateway drug to other works of JAL. :D
As far as any single awkward moments...Well, just like you when I watch the film I tend to fill in the blanks..."This is where Eli did this...This is where Oskar did that...This is where Hakan did this.." It becomes a very odd, but rewarding experience....When book and a movie become one in your head and it all transforms into an almost mulimedia-like experience. It's unforgettable....

I can't say I've thought there were parts of the novel that were in the film, but I do wish some parts of the novel had been included. At the risk of going a bit OT, I wished they could have included the part in the novel where Oskar and Eli play knights & dragons in the basement and Eli dubs Oskar "knight of Angby maybe," then giggled together while they hid from the resident manager.

@nightrider:
hahaha "gateway drug"
Books-- stronger than drugs.

I don't know if this is awkward (maybe for my roommate), but it did scare me.
My roommate came home late one night and I didn't noticed he was watching the movie with me (standing behind me). I was sitting very quietly in my room with the lights off at 1:00 a.m. I stopped the movie at the bleeding scene.
I went to the bathroom. I tried opening the bathroom door, but it wouldn't budge, so I was thinking "WTF? There's someone on the other side... I'm gonna die." I was close to having a panic attack. I was thankful I was watching something I love before I die. lol
He said, "You may not come in." and laughed.
After he opened the door I stood there, shaking with my head down re-enacting Eli's part. Slowly walking towards him... I hugged him... and bit his shoulder. Then I chased after him and punched him.

There are definitely parts of the book I wish were in the movie, though my conception of book Eli is drastically different from movie Eli. Two completely different personalities and mannerisms. I have a clear picture of what book Eli looks like, as well as the egg, though Oskar remains more or less transferable between the two. That's not to say I don't like movie Eli, I love that character too. So I guess the movie and book are ultimately two separate entities in my mind, though I treasure them both.

Yep, that happens to me too. They are two separated universes, with their own particularities, but sometimes they merge into only one, reinforcing mutually.

The scene of "knight of Angby maybe" and other funny parts of the movie, like the banana's one, I wish they were in the movie too. But somehow, I think they wouldn't fit in the movie as well as in the book. Those scenes showed Eli acting like a child, trying to be "normal", and they say a lot about the character. One of the differences for me is that the movie showed Eli a little less interested in regaining her youth, it would have been needed the scenes about her past, too. If the movie were longer... :? But I also like the way it is.

I've only read the book once so far, while I've watched the movie about... well, not sure, too many times 8-) My memory is horrible, so I have not many blanks to fill in ^__^U

I think when you start to write FF, the film and book begin to cross-pollinate. At least, that happened to me...
