Hope Ophelia won't mind me linking to her sketch to introduce this little topic.
I am curious to hear opinions on just how asleep Eli is during the day. You're welcome to pull from the film or the novel.
It seems to me when I read the book (don't recall precisely where), that sleep for vampires is different from sleep for normal folks; there seems to be an "on-off" quality to it. And their sleep cycles are apparently tied to the rising and setting of the sun.
Yet, there are indications that they are arousable during the day, or at least when the night is just over, or when the day is about to be over. I base this on Eli's waking up in the film when Lacke tries to let more light into the bathroom and Oskar shouts a warning, and on Virginia's ability to tell the hospital attendant to open the blinds when clearly, the sun is up. Maybe their are transitional zones on either side of night in which they have the ability to function for brief periods?
Another point is that, as best I can recall, in classical vampire tradition vampires cannot leave their resting place until it is fully dark. Yet, Eli is apparently capable of springing from her tub to nom Lacke. I suppose this may not contradict the traditional rule if we assume that dusk falls right at the instant that Lacke does his thing, but this seems to me, at least, too happy a coincidence. Hmmm...
