Newbie here - couple of questions

Post by edwelly » Wed Jul 13, 2011 6:39 pm

Hello all. New here as you can see by my post count :D
I watched LTROI about a year ago and recently saw LMI. Just finished the book last night and I have a few questions. I have been searching the forum and will continue to do so, but thought I would ask anyway.
1) Is it ever told how Eli is actually turned into a vampire?
2) What was the significance or purpose of Eli being castrated?
3) Did the zombie Hakan actually sexually assault Eli or just tried really, really hard?

I think that is it for now.
Thanks and glad to be here ~ Erik

Welcome!

In the passage that describes Eli's castration, it is written that the vampire lord bites him repeatedly after the castration. That, presumably, is when he was turned.

It is never explained why Eli was castrated. One can only assume that the vampire lord is sadistic.

I think Hakan's efforts as a zombie only amounted to an attempted rape, not an actual one.

I must have glanced over the part about the vampire lord biting him. I remember a part where he drinks Eli's blood, but not the part about the lord actually biting him.

I assumed as much as well.

That is what I took from it. Hakan tried desperately but never really happened. Even though this is but a fictional book, I really wanted Hakan to fail at the penetration part. But wasn't 100% sure.

It got far too close, also tearing his ear and the cartilages of his legs. But no.

Umm, what else interests you about the story...? :D

Yes, it has said that the vampire, after castrating him, drank from his blood and bit him over and over.
2) What was the significance or purpose of Eli being castrated?
For JAL, he wanted Eli to be asexual. He wanted to create a relationship where there isn't anything sexual, just pure love. In the novel, the vampire is just a sadistic sicko.
3) Did the zombie Hakan actually sexually assault Eli or just tried really, really hard?

I don't think he managed to enter him. At least i would like to think so. It's just to nauseating to read someone raping 12 year olds.

I felt that I went thru the correct order in how I learned about Eli and Oskar. Watching LTROI first, then LMI and finally the novel. I found Eli so fascinating and how she is depicted so differently in each of the 3 interpretations. Odd thing about this is that I have soooo much trouble reading that I finally gave up. I read the novel in 3 days. HUGE deal for me.
Now to your question:
Umm, what else interests you about the story...?
I really enjoyed the way Tommy in the novel. It made me smile on the inside to know that not everyone was mean and hateful to Oskar. I was glad to see Tommy to watch over him.

I thought I was going to sh1t myself too when I realized he was locked in the room with zombie Hakan. But I did feel like that the whole zombie Hakan part was rather silly. It really didn't fit in any way to the story. I understand the argument about needing to create an environment about seeing Eli as the victim, but I don’t think it really worked. I think a better way would have been to tell more about Eli's past, specifically the turning. It is such a vague part of the story. Only a few real paragraphs are dedicated to this yet there are several pages about Eli and zombie Hakan.

Another thought and possibly an underlying reason I dislike the zombie Hakan part so much is why didn't Eli kick his ace? In the end, it was a scared kid who sh1t himself ends up taking down a zombie Hakan.

Well, i think it's because Eli was trying to find a way to destroy him and that was by fire. Simply kicking him around or in the dick wasn't going to do the trick and Hakan is way bigger than Eli too.
