Eli's appearance

Post by protostar_01 » Mon Jul 06, 2009 5:47 am

Eli's appearance changes throughout the movie which I assumed was to show her various states of hunger. However there are several changes I'm not sure if it's me but it appears she ages.

In the scenes where she is standing on the jungle gym and then walking around in the basement after Oskar's workout she appears older.

In the scenes where she greets Oskar in her apartment and the 2nd shot of her telling Oskar to go when she was drinking the blood on the floor she seems younger.

Was this just a trick of camera angles and lighting? Or was TA trying to show Eli was also regressing to be more childlike? In the book, Hakan's notes that Eli was regressing in that she was acting more childlike.

I'd wager it was probably just Lina going through puberty. Most movies aren't filmed in sequence.

In several interviews, Tomas said something about Eli's facial proportions being CGI-altered from scene to scene to give her a more otherworldly look. In combination with Maria Strid's brillant effort in makeup, this certainly might have quite an impact on the viewer's perception.

I don't think that's what protostar was talking about...

Tape,

I think what proto means is the basement scene. After the "aged Eli" stand-in, Eli reverts back to her normal self. This normal Eli has Lina more like a 10-11 year-old. The face looks more kid-like compared to her other scenes. More girlish as well.

It didn't occur to me that puberty could be the reason for some of the change in appearance. Thanks for bringing it up Vox.

Genie47 is correct. That was the scene I was referring to in my original post about Eli appearing younger.

Might be possible, after all. There's a "Behind the scenes"-featurette where they show the pool scene being shot with Eli pulling Oskar out of the water. Lina is wearing a black swimsuit in that scene and she shows signs of growing hips and breast.

That waddling run at the jungle gym also gave her away as a girl going through puberty. The hips disrupt running gait and it is felt by almost all girls. They have to re-learn running all over again.

Ugh. I almost wish you hadn't mentioned this. Now someone is sure to ask for pics. :|

Where did you manage to see the behind the scenes featurette? I thought it was only on the US DVD/Blu-ray. If it's available on the web someplace I'll add a link to it.
...the story derives a lot of its appeal from its sense of despair and a darkness in which the love of Eli and Oskar seems to shine with a strange and disturbing light.

It was on youtube. Unfortunately, meanwhile, it had been removed, of course.
