If Eli Turned Oskar, Would They Recruit A Caretaker

Post by abner_mohl » Tue Oct 26, 2010 3:53 am

Found this interview with TA at http://www.currybet.net/cbet_blog/2009/ ... irecto.php where TA suggests one possible happy ending for Oskar & Eli:
Tomas Alfredson said that his fantasy for the central characters is that they went on to become eternal vampire lovers, although a member of the audience pointed out that the form of the movie could be seen to show the idea that this was a cyclical story that kept recurring in Eli's life. I think I prefer the idea of the happy ending.
I wonder if Oskar were turned even though he has seemed to have rejected killing after Lacke was nommed by Eli, would they need recruit another a caretaker for the both of them, perhaps for a change they could recruiting a woman to serve as a "mom".

This is a good question. This idea is both horrifyinig and beautiful at the same time. Two eternal child vampires killing and loving through the centuries. Killing only as vampires can, but also loving only as perpetual children can with their first love.

If Oskar was turned, they could babysit each other after one of them goes to "big sleep". After they awake, they are weak, forgetful and small, and that's when they need the help the most. I guess the big question will be how are they going to do it when they are both asleep? What incentive can they give a "mom" to go and kill for them? Maternal instinct? How?

*Ponders some more...

Wolfchild maintains that the dynamic seen in the LTROI movie is very delicate. Eli loves Oskar as he is, just as he loves her in spite of what she is. A turned Oskar is a changed Oskar, there's a very large risk the delicate dynamic between the two would change. Forget minders, how could we envision turning Oskar such that their relationship as it was when they left Blackeberb wouldn't turn into something different, and probably something worse?

Yes, the thought has occurred to me: a pair of vampire child prostitutes turning tricks for blood.

The only way I could conceive of this happening is if Oskar has concluded that the ordinary world of adults was hopeless. Better to live as a 12 year old outcast forever than become like one of the adults.

Johnajvide makes the point that being a vampire is not cool. Turning Oskar would only be a quicker way to get to your "Oskar at 40." Whether it was fair or not, I feel that a turned Oskar would wind up hating himself and Eli too.

I'll break open the story and tell you what is there. Then, like the others that have fallen out onto the sand, I will finish with it, and the wind will take it away.

Then again, can you imagine finding the love of your life and watching them grow old, wither and die while you remain unchanged? Or how about the opposite, growing old while your true love remains a child?
I like to think Oskar will want to change or to be changed when he realizes this.
I see him struggling with the brutal "reality" that to have their love be eternal he would have to.
The question I keep asking myself is would he be able to live with himself when he started killing? This is what I am struggling with as to the writing of further fanfiction, now that I have turned Oskar how is he going to get by?
It is very easy to draw them together as vampires, but to write them I am finding rather difficult.

It will be interesting to find out how one of the greatest storytellers I know of goes about this puzzle. And he admitted it wasn't easy.

Nice to see that others are examining these questions. I feel as though I have waded through them as much as I can ...

The thought have been pondered by more than one FF writer over here, though I admit "Once bitten" is my favorite. In another FF there was a notion explored that eventually kids understood that Oskar growing up would separate them forever, and thus Oskar would turn despite the darkness of it to stay with Eli and in love.

Well I can't see Oskar becoming a vampire but I would understand if he did since he wouldn't want to lose Eli.

I would say "no" to recruiting a caretaker. I think Eli only suffered these periods of hibernation because of depression. And the depression was caused IMHO primarily by not having anyone she could relate to. I mean, how many vampire kids are there? And Eli can never grow up. Eli really only has three requirements: companionship, blood, and somewhere to hide and sleep during the day. If she has to have a grown-up non-vampire as a caretaker, she in effect also has to take care of the caretaker. The caretaker needs regular food and a reasonably comfortable place to live. Which means that the caretaker needs money. So you are sort of in a place where you wonder "who is taking care of who?" I think with regular same-age vampire companionship, Eli would have a reason to kill without being so bothered with guilt. She might even actually start enjoying it.

Dissenting opinions are, of course, welcome.

Even if they won't change my opinion.
