I think that's my biggest fear that is just growing with every new interview...that I'm not going to be able to care anywhere near as much for Owen and Abby as I did for Oskar and Eli.
I found it easy to care for Owen. Abby, on the other hand, left me cold at first because of her relationship with Jenkin's character. She treats him much worse than Eli ever treated Hakan. Yet Thomas has presumably been with her for decades, and she is supposed to still love him. She says all the right things to Owen, she seems sweet and supportive and caring. After Owen discovers the photograph, however, I couldn't help but wonder what was really going on, and it was apparent from Owen's reaction that he wondered the same. I did pity her, but I cared more about Owen than her, and more about how much harm she could bring to him than how lonely she would be without him.

Something I found interesting is the different reactions the two boys had to seeing their beloved at the end of the pool scene (covered in case you don't want to see). It's as if Owen had an inkling of what was in store for him:

Hehe, Owen looks rather like "Fuck, not you... I'd rather have died in here!"

So is that what the bloody disgusting review means? I remember reading the BD review where they state that "the ending really implies what a cold hearted bitch Abby is and exactly what she is doing to Owen" (not the exact quote, but still the gist of what they wrote). And I always wondered what they meant by that yet what you just wrote explains a little better.

Everything you just stated is essentially what I fear about this remake, that I'm not gonna care for the both of them. Sure I will probably still care for Owen, but if they have me starting to care about Hakan more than I can care about Abby, then something is severly wrong here.

And LMAO again Tapetrve....I do like you sir :) Its always a pleasure to read your postings and the laughs they inspire.

So I wonder what the implications are with Owen's reaction when Abby has to leave after killing the policeman, is it a sense of relief that the monster is finally gone, or does he still long for her like Oskar did for Eli.

I don't know about that, I laughed at the Sólstafir reference yesterday...most people I know wouldn't get that (then again there not really into Black Metal so, thats kind of obscure and witty :))

I think the reviewer was referring to a song Owen sings at the end while on the train. When you first see Owen he is singing the theme from the Now-Or-Later candy commercial---"Eat some now, save some for later". At the end of the film, the words take on a somewhat ominous meaning, if you keep in mind what happened to Abby's previous paramour. The audience I was with murmured and laughed, but it was sort of a chilling moment.

Owen is sad as he watches her being driven away, but the film doesn't linger on it as LTROI did with Oskar. No time to mourn, it's off to the pool.

Sólstafir! Somehow I doubt she'd be affacted by them though, people get different feelings from different kind of music, plus she's 13. I try not get arrogant about music taste, it's all just relative to one's perception of the music; I can't perceive what other people get from different music and I'm not more special than other people nor are my feelings more 'sophisticated' than theirs, even though I'd like to believe so. Although it's hard not to get arrogant when I listen to bands like Sólstafir, Opeth and Porcupine Tree and then meet someone who listens to f.i. hip-hop...

More on-topic: Her saying Abby is evil is probably just her interpretation, she didn't write the screenplay after all nor direct the film. Her opinion might even change when she sees LTROI.
