A Follow Up Book?

Post by danielma » Wed Sep 01, 2010 12:46 am

So I was just reading the "new infected" thread, btw welcome Bri29 glad to see another infected join our ranks :)

but anyways whilst reading that thread, I couldn't help but notice this in Bri29's latest posting
Come on John there should be another 2 books at least to follow this i got my money ready
And naturally a thought occured. Would anyone want to see John actually write a full fledged follow up to LTROI? I know he has the Epilouge coming, but would anyone actually want to see him do a complete follow up to LTROI?

I'm going to throw my opinion in here and say No. I actually wouldn't want him to write a follow up. I kind of like the way the book ends in leaving it open to the reader as to what happens next. I guess if he had a story to tell with it then I'd no doubt read it, but I can't say I'm clamoring for him to write a follow up. I really like the book and story as it is and I don't think I really want to know what happens next with them. As I said, I'd read it if John did have a good story to tell. But I don't think I'm clamoring for a follow up either

So anyone else?

No, no, no, definitely not. Writing a sequel would reduce LTROI's wonderful ending to a mere wortless cliffhanger. We'll be treated with an epilogue, that's more than enough. I hope, it doesn't turn out too concrete, though. Maybe something in the vein of Burgess' A Clockwork Orange.

I agree with dan; I like the way the story ends just as it is, because it really doesn't end. And since it goes on, unwritten, look at all the great fan fics that have come about. I don't even like the idea of an epilogue, although it's coming regardless. At least, JAL has said that Eli and Oskar are relatively minor characters in "Let The Old Dreams Die"; I'm hoping that the story only tells me the one thing I want to know: That Oskar has let Eli infect him and the two of them will be together for a looooong time. :)

From what I have read, Johnadjvide has no interest in writing any more books about these characters.

I'll break open the story and tell you what is there. Then, like the others that have fallen out onto the sand, I will finish with it, and the wind will take it away.

I'm actually looking forward to the Epilouge Let the Old Dreams Die for that very reason, the fact that they are just going to be a relative minor note in it...don't think I'd want the epilouge to be completely about them and where they went, but I kind of like the idea of them playing a minor note in it. If that makes sense. That made me more excited for Let the Old Dreams Die.

No I'm in total agreeance with most people that have posted so far. I don't want a follow up, because I pretty much have my own idea of where these characters went next (maybe one day I'll get around to throwing my hat in for the fan fiction circle :D). But yeah I have my own idea as to what happens next to Oskar and Eli. And for that reason I would never want a full fledged follow up.

But I would be open to it if John turned around and actually had a story to tell with it...doubt it will ever happen, we've got more chances of a Eli vs. Edward Cullen cross over than John writing a follow up :) But yeah if he were to have a story that was just as good as LTROI, I would be open for it I guess. But I really wouldn't want him to write a follow up.

No to a follow up book. I, like all of you, love the way the story ends. Absolutely no need for another book. I'm nervous about the epilogue, but I remain optimistic.

No since I like the ending of the book. I don't see a sequel been done unless it was necessary.

JAL gave us so much with his tale of Oskar and Eli and I see the open end of the story as yet another gift. It allows each of us to immerse our imaginations in the countless possibilities of their future, for better or worse. ;) Usually with an open ended story I crave absolution (if the story is good that is) but the wonder-filled ending of LTROI left me completely satisfied because with Oskar and Eli I don't want a definite end. Do I think the story needs any more content? No, not really, but I am looking forward to the epilogue just to get another glimpse of the characters I have come to love and cherish and hopefully learn that their tale can indeed go on forever. . I admit that if JAL were to write one or more books about Oskar and Eli I would surely gobble it/them up just as I do the awesome fan fic on this site. Of course his words carry the truth and weight of the story so I would hope that he would always leave their lives open to further interpretation.

I would be in favor of his writing a sequel but ONLY if he could top his first effort. But as one author once said, "Writing a best-seller is like crawling across a very narrow plank over a very deep canyon. And writing a second best-seller is like crawling back across that same plank".

I would hate to see John fall off.

The epilogue will be nice, if we ever get to see it, but the ending was perfect. I wish it were possible to continue with follow-up book(s), but frankly I don't see how JAL can improve on perfection. :(
