Well, Cthulhuthanos, it's what I say, but it's not what everyone on the forum says. In my case, it was watching LTROI (with the right subs, thank goodness) on ShowTime in March 2013. The way the credits opened and turned into a snowstorm at night got my complete attention. By the time pale, self-possessed Eli cocked her head and said, "What are you doing?", I was a goner. I spent the next four months introducing everyone I could to the film and rampaging around the Internet reading reviews and comments before I found this forum. Wuh! It entralled some of us that quickly, but you'll read that everybody found their way here in their own unique way.Cthulhuthanos wrote:Wait, is that what people on these boards say? "I was infected *place first experience here*"? That is both awesome and rather hilarious. That would be similar to me going "The first Iron man movie is when Thor's hammer hit me in the face" in relation to your first experience with a Marvel...um..well anything.

I watched the film in a film class. I was picking fun at my instructor for having our class watch a vampire romance film....needless to say I learned my place within the first five minutes of the film.

I'm always interested when I hear about LTROI being used in college courses. What was the course? What were the assignments around LTROI?Cthulhuthanos wrote:I watched the film in a film class. Further, what college? Who was the instructor?
In the past, I have contacted instructors who had put on showings LTROI. I might end up contacting your instructor as well.
However, I am never in favor of people feeling pressured to post personal information of any kind here. I urge you to consider your comfort level on your own personal privacy, and if you don't care to answer any questions (especially about what college and what instructor), then ignore them. In fact, you can ignore this entire post if you wish.
...the story derives a lot of its appeal from its sense of despair and a darkness in which the love of Eli and Oskar seems to shine with a strange and disturbing light.

Sure thing. It was used in "Introduction to Film" at Mankato State University in Minnesota. We watch a film every class and write a paper on it afterwards. this paper had to do with Identifying Genres. As someone who is rather adapt in film terminology and production, the class is merely a prerequisite into the internship production courses. That, however, is another conversation all together. While I am in communication with my instructor, I would be hesitant in giving away personal information. Needless to say, he has never read the book or seen the American remake. He didn't even know there was a book until someone in class told him. However, he said that he really enjoyed the film from a scholars perspectives, and he considers it one of the best vampire films of all time. Which is crazy considering he's a nut for old films.

hi Cthulhuthanos
I'm wondering what your class thought of Eli, especially those who didn't read the book. Were her possible motivations part of the film discussion? Did your professor/class see her as manipulative or what?

Hello cmfireflies, my class, unfortunately, was full of about 100 Freshmen who could care less about the class and or the movie. Of the ones who did speak up, they just considered it a refreshing vampire film in contrast with the Twilight series. It's really unfortunate too because I know there are people in the class who have good opinions but are too afraid to speak. My instructor thought that Eli was a very interesting vampire in that she was almost de-humanized in order to portray a creature the somewhat differs from the Hollywood vampire. He thought that there was an argument for both cases, Eli being manipulative and Eil being in love. He also noted on the age of Eli in comparison to most vampires, as he felt they pulled off the "child monster" very well.
