New feature on JAL's site: character database

Post by Siggdalos » Thu Dec 05, 2024 2:09 pm

Today Hans-Åke announced a new feature on JAL's website, a searchable database of every major and minor (named) person mentioned in JAL's stories. Seems like it could be a fun nerdy thing. Possibly useful for discussions and fan fiction and the like, too.

Here's the announcement post:
Who's who in John Ajvide Lindqvist's books and short stories? Which people have appeared in more than one book? Would it be interesting to see whether John has given any character your name? Now you can get answers to all of these questions… and a few more.

We are now releasing a searchable database of every person and character who appears in John's texts, to date 1,764 ones.

You can find information in the database in three ways:
  1. By searching among names, nicknames and information.
  2. By listing all included people and characters.
  3. By grouping by book or short story.
In addition to this, we also list all of the connections that exist between John's books and short stories. Check if you know them all. Does the field from I Am Behind You really appear in The Writing in the Water? Does Tommy T from I Am the Tiger really mention the Pool Massacre from Let the Right One In? You'll find all of the info on the new page.
De höll om varandra i tystnad. Oskar blundade och visste: detta var det största. Ljuset från lyktan i portvalvet trängde svagt in genom hans slutna ögonlock, la en hinna av rött för hans ögon. Det största.

Very interesting, I was surprised by the number of characters John created.
And how nice that there is a description even of the background characters.

Thanks! I'm glad you like this. It was quite a lot of work to create the database but fun.

I did. I spent about 7 months rereading everything John has written and while doing so wrote down every name in every story, where they appeared and who they were. I then put it all in a database and now everyone can enjoy it.

A question, I was looking through the let the right one in section, and I saw that all kinds of characters are listed, but Oskar's mother isn't listed (I wanted to see if her name was really like Tommy's mom), do you have any idea why she's not on the list? or maybe I didn't search well enough lol

It only includes named or nicknamed characters. Oskar's mother's name is never mentioned in the book.

Posting in this thread since it's sort of related: there's now also a Props section of the site showcasing pictures of objects from JAL's film adaptations. First off, some of the zombie masks and such from HTU (not recommended viewing for the squeamish).
