Thanks for signposting this article. Having been a 'non-tourist' visitor to India, it sadly, comes as no surprise. I was certainly shorn of any idealistic notions I held of India. There are poorer places in Africa, where such behaviour would be considered impossible, as people share what little they have. In India, anything and everything, is for sale. This tends to happen in cultures that believe that humanity is not a ''given''. That people can be de-humanised to the extent that they believe that some humans are lower life-forms than animals.
I'm not sure of the relationship to Eli. I would hope beyond the flippant. But Eli is an enforced vampire so it does relate on that level. I'm trying not to drift into politics here. I'm sure there ARE 'real-life' Eli's out there. Oskar is an enforced low-caste. He is bathed in low self-esteem. 'Piggy' is not an accidental term, as pig-meat is considered untouchable by many religious communities. LTROI is a fable, reminding us that the worst behaviour in humanity (and this is reflected in Eli's self-revulsion, he is a vampire) can at least be assuaged and overcome through the redeeming power of love.
