Worst summary of book/film (for fun)

Post by lombano » Wed Sep 16, 2009 10:06 pm

This is a complex story and thus it is easy to give a totally misleading impression if you summarise it in a few words or even a few lines - it's not your typical horror story, or vampire story, or romance. So what's the most misleading summary you can think of / have come across, that is technically factually accurate?

I'll start: LTROI is about two kids that are neighbours, one of them has a rare illness that interferes a lot with his life (can't eat sweets, for example) and unsuccessfully tries to hide it from others.

Older girl with a drinking problem befriends boy with dreams of murderous vengeance. She wins his heart later by acting out his violent fantasies.

Or fluffier:
A sensitive boy meets the new girl in town and becomes her first friend. He's heartbroken when she has to leave because of an annoying neighbor, but the two friends reunite at the end in time to learn a heartwarming lesson about friendship and the importance of being kind to others.

A vampire love triangle.

Let's see, there is Håkan, Eli and Oskar. Yeah. Vampire love triangle.
Låt den rätte komma in in both its printed and celluloid form is a slow acting poison. You will be poisoned white. White from arsenic and innocence.

He's a tortured twelve-yeard old boy with a death wish. She's two-hundred years old vampire stuck in a child's body. Together, they fight school bullies!

About to fall
Praise be to the starless nights
Full of gloom
Praise be to the shadows

you say that but; the trailer for LTROI initially gave me the wrong idea about the film all together. I watched the trailer sometime ago on a DVD. It showed Oska holding a knife, holding his other hand out to ELi smiling, Eli looked like a little girl who was uncertain - I got the feeling she was under threat, it then showed her getting to her knees lapping up the blood on the floor; with Oska looking puzzled. I got the impression the boy was planing to hurt the girl and he was surprised to see her drink blood. I though OK a child vampire with a bully who would get what he deserved, probably worth a look if there is nothing else to watch.

Another trailer depicts Eli almost as a monster vampire who finds prey. I hate trailers like this - if I was hoping for a scary film with gore etc - this would not be it. Instead just ends up being one of the best movies ever for me.

anyhow - I don't know perhaps --

she is a child, a victim of abuse, has a drinking problem and is alone in the world; her life changed when she met Oska, the boy who gained her trust, who wets himself (alot) with an interest in knives and trees.

A film about love and the obstacles that would try and keep these children apart.

Ugh. I deserve to be shot for that. :D
...the story derives a lot of its appeal from its sense of despair and a darkness in which the love of Eli and Oskar seems to shine with a strange and disturbing light.

Cash-rich but friend-poor orphan and working class boy with who reads a lot get in trouble with neighbours and schoolmates - some people really lose their heads over the pair.

or

Eli has a terrible secret she has confided to an ex-schoolteacher who tries to help; Oskar is a neighbour with a tree problem. Together they teach lessons about why you shouldn't enter other people's homes uninvited and why children swimming should not be left unattended.

Fortunately I didn't watch any trailers before seeing the film, I agree they're misleading. In one of them, it looks like Oskar is going to stab Eli.

BTW people, I loved the 'older girl with a drinking problem' thing, hadn't thought of that! :D And Wolfie, your summary is not factually accurate...

Whaddya mean? Of course his mother is a TV addict!

In any case, from what I have seen the facts have never been requirement for summarizing this story. :P
