Eli chooses Oskar as her new caretaker and pushes him to defend himself throughout the film.
Nice to see LTROI featured on a personal blog and it is good overall, if not a bit short, but it is yet another blog pushing the Oskar as caretaker theory.

This blogger makes it sound like Eli is in complete control and has a blueprint to follow, right down to the last little giggle and sashay. Eli is going to spend a few years getting Oskar built up enough to do the food shopping because she needs somebody to do this for her if she is to survive? So, what's she going to do until Oskar comes up to speed? Go on a diet?

Go, Sauve... I couldn't even read it. As soon as I hear 'Oskar is the next -' my brain shuts down. With an "Aaargh!"

In their defense, they haven't read the book and both Tomas and JAL have said the "future caretaker" idea is a very definite possibility in the film.

Sure, I can see where someone comes up with that opinion but that doesn't stop me from trying to change that opinion. :D

While she may look like a twelve year old girl, she is older, wiser, and more manipulative than the average viewer might think.
I continue to be fascinated with how gender influences opinion on this subject. The idea that Eli is the older woman "interviewing" for a new caretaker is based in very old stereotypes about the relationship between men and women.

I'll break open the story and tell you what is there. Then, like the others that have fallen out onto the sand, I will finish with it, and the wind will take it away.

Yes that is a fair observation gattoparde59. This is something I have noticed on other pages/blogs too. I don't like this spin on the gender issue as it makes Eli no better than those who abused her. The notion that Eli uses her sexuality to manipulate Oskar is an unpleasant one in my opinion.
