Unreleased Stories? Question Regarding LTODD trailer

Post by Ethoic » Fri Jan 16, 2015 4:37 pm

Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster :) I was watching the old trailer from 2011 for "Let The Old Dreams Die", and it raised a question about (possible) unreleased stories by JAL. In the trailer, John mentions descriptions of several stories that he says are going to be included LTODD, but were not. Such as: "The woman that since she was a girl has been followed by a chewing sound that she knows is after her", "The boy who fell in love with a girl that does not exist", "The friends sitting in a forest burning phone books until a man shows up at their camp and gives them a gun, and what it does to their friendship."

As far as I know, "Paper Walls" never got a UK or US release, but it contained the same stories that are in LTODD. Am I right in thinking John has only published 2 collections of short stories, each the same stories but with a different title? And if so, what happened to the above stories he talked about in the trailer? I apologise if this has been covered on the forums before, but I wasn't really sure what to search for with the names of the stories John mentioned.

Hi Adam. Since you've been lurking for a while, there must be a story as to how you got here. Movie first? Book first? I feel that LTODD is a very good short story and a nice piece of writing by JAL. He takes his time telling it so you can really get into the characters. And it leaves great food for thought about what Eli and Oskar have been up to since Blackeberg and what happens after the couple goes to Barcelona to look for them.

Perhaps this will simplify things a bit. Or not...

This is an entry I've posted in 2012 discussing "Paper Walls" and "Let The Old Dreams Die".

John has published two anthologies in Swedish, Pappersväggar (paper walls), and Låt de gamla drömmarna dö (let the old dreams die.) The one he promotes in the video is the latter one.

The English anthology that is called Let the Old Dreams Die consists of the short stories in Pappersväggar plus the title one from Låt de gamla drömmarna dö. The other stores in John's second anthology are as yet not published in English.

It's too bad, but it seems quite a few of JAL's stories from Swedish edition of Paper Walls(Pappersväggar) will not be translated into English...at least not anytime soon.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. It does clarify my confusion somewhat. I have the UK edition of LTODD, and it's probably one of my favourite collection of short stories. I think it shows the diversity John has as a writer and is a highly original collection unlike anything else (just like all of John's stories, of course :)). I'm still unsure about where the stories John mentioned in the trailer are, or where they might turn up, but perhaps the new short story collection mentioned in the most recent season's greeting might shed some light on that.

For me, the movie came first. I discovered it (can't exactly remember how) in 2012, and bought the book the next day. I guess I found LTROI at a pretty dark time in my life, and it really hit home for me and helped me through. (Sounds cliche, I know). It is still my favourite film and novel, and no doubt always will be.

I also love LTODD, and the title story about Eli and Oskar. Although I was a little unsure about the idea of revisiting Eli and Oskar before reading it, the story was told in such a compelling, beautiful, and clever way I felt it made the perfect epilogue.

Anyway, enough rambling from me ;)

They are in the Swedish anthology Låt de gamla drömmarna dö. Only one of of the stories in there has been published in English so far: the title story of the English anthology Let the Old Dreams Die. The latter book is otherwise identical to the Swedish book Pappersdrömmar.
