Matt Reeves looks like that infamous drinking friend. Who looks like Jesus Christ, so this is basically a compliment.
Nice found, as always.

And we danced, on the brink of an unknown future, to an echo from a vanished past.

In the first and second photo, you see Owen and all the bullies (Kenny, Mark, Donald and Kenny's brother). Kenny (Played by Dylan Minnette) is wearing a gauze pad on his face. My guess is they were taking a break from filming the "school scene". Remember in the original, after Oskar hit Conny in the face with a stick, there was a scene in which Oskar saw Conny, wearing a gauze pad on his face, being bullied by his brother Jimmy on the playground.
In the third photo, you see Donald (Andreas in the original?) and Owen.

In the third, is that head twisting I see? Don't try this at home kids.
I'll break open the story and tell you what is there. Then, like the others that have fallen out onto the sand, I will finish with it, and the wind will take it away.

Maybe - but that sweater definitely
does say, "Beat me up."

...the story derives a lot of its appeal from its sense of despair and a darkness in which the love of Eli and Oskar seems to shine with a strange and disturbing light.

I don't know about this cast. They all look so raunchy and low class. They seem so far removed from the clean cut, well dressed kids in the original. With the artistic, otherworldly feel of the Swedish movie gone, I sure hope they have something else to make up for it!

The bullies in this version all seem to be quite a bit older or bigger than Owen.

That is what I remember American bullies being like, circa the 1970s.

My early impression of the Matt Reeves version is that everything will be more overstated. The bullies are bigger. Owen's family life is much more dysfunctional. The bullying sounds like it will be worse. Abby will be more of a monster, etc. etc.

The strange thing is, all of this - even if absolutely true - says nothing about whether or how much of the story's magic will be captured onscreen. Kinda cool, I think.

Exactly my thought! I'm getting more and more hopeful as more and more info leaks out.

We never stop reading, although every book comes to an end, just as we never stop living, although death is certain. (Roberto Bolaño)
