Shakespeare does actually share things in common with johnajvide. In both you see pop culture, pedantry, philosophy, horror, mixed with low (as in anatomically low) humor. Shakespeare appears to have been post-modern before post-modern was cool.
But let's not talk about Shakespeare, or Melville, or even Conrad. Let's talk about Little Star. Little Star is a horror story in which many people die horrible deaths, but the death of one person stands out above all the others. This is Max the music promoter. Max is depicted by johnajvide as a sleazy guy who uses his position to rape and otherwise sexually abuse young women. Sort of like Harvey Weinstein, only without Harvey's good looks and charm. Max is shown to be a completely loathsome character who dies in a torture porn scene complete with a money shot involving a young girl. (If you don't know what a money shot is, Google).
Why am I going on about this? Because Max's death is treated as a big joke. You ask "how could torturing a person to death be a big joke?" Because Max has already been depicted as a loathsome scumbag, so he is getting what he deserves. We can make light of his horrible fate. I know I laughed at some of the scenes with Max. This is not to say this is great literature, or that it is not great literature. My point is you see much the same thing with the depiction of Haken in Let the Right One In.
I find the tone taken as we work out the fate of Haken is very much like the tone taken with Max. Haken is depicted as a scumbag who deserves everything he gets. Its okay! Its funny because he is pedophile suffering all kinds of atrocities. Many people die horrible deaths in Let the Right One In, but only one character is treated in this way. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think this is the origin of Phobos' complaint.
This is a strange thread. I never thought I would be taking the side of a pedophile, so Phobos better not be some crazy troll with too much time on his hands.
