Eli asks Oskar

Re: Eli asks Oskar
When Eli kisses Oskar and shows him that she sees him with love. Maybe that is the gift that she gives to him.

Yes, I agree. That is indeed the gift.EEA wrote:When Eli kisses Oskar and shows him that she sees him with love. Maybe that is the gift that she gives to him.
By the way, I still like my idea of Oskar imagining the ultimate gift to Eli sometime during the night or morning before they left Blackeberg together: Himself, forever.

Have you written that idea as a FF? Because I would want to read it
Here is my version from By The Train Station FF:
"What do you think Eli would like?"
"You wrapped in a present!" I said as a joke to Oskar.
"That's a good idea Lucy! I am the perfect present!"
And Oskar went of running...
Later that day....
Where could she have hidden it this time? I have to know what it says on that diary.....
"So remember Lucy you have to tell Eli I will be in the basement....."
"Sure. Sure."
What had Oskar said? Probably nothing important. Now where is Eli's diary......
Later that week....
"Lucy have you seen Oskar?"
"No, last time I saw him he was planning to give you a gift."
"Really? What could it be!"
"He said something about wrapping himself, or something...."
Oh no! Oskar! Had he really! I took off running before Eli would find Oskar, else she would be chasing me around!
In the basement.....
Oskar wrapped in gift paper all over his body.
I can't move, what is taking so long...
Lucy must forgotten to tell Eli..... She always forgets things!

Re: Eli asks Oskar
We don't know what Eli did or where he went between the 'seen with love' passage and his return to save Oskar. The departing taxi is only in the film. I wonder whether Eli found somewhere nearby to shelter and returned to see what happened with Oskar and the bullies. I have always thought Eli must have been watching from the roof of the pool - he had already thought his wings and teeth into existence before he banged on the door - fulfilling his promise
‘Then I’ll help you.’
‘You? But you are …’
‘I can do it, Oskar. That … is something I can do.’

Yeah and maybe that promise could be what brought Eli back to check on Oskar.Swaefheard wrote:We don't know what Eli did or where he went between the 'seen with love' passage and his return to save Oskar. Well, I imagine that Eli did the sensible thing and went as far away as possible, by taxi, bus, train, whatever, maybe travelling for several nights. Then, on the fourth night since leaving Oskar he woke up at dusk, feeling even more miserable than the nights before. He sat for a couple of hours brooding, but then he said "what the heck", took to his wings and returned to Blackeberg. First he visited Oskar's window, but when no Oskar was to be found there he remembered the training, and continued to the school. What happened there we all know.Swaefheard wrote:We don't know what Eli did or where he went between the 'seen with love' passage and his return to save Oskar. The departing taxi is only in the film. Re: Eli asks Oskar
By the way to what other places could Eli have travel to? Or would she stay in Blackeberg? She could have stayed in one of the abandoned buildings mention in the book. Knowing though what the risk is if she stays in town.
To me Eli stays around town struggling to see if she leaves or not. Then she finally decides to check one more time on Oskar before deciding to leave and when she does she sees that Oskar is in danger. Then she rescues Oskar.

Re: Eli asks Oskar
By returning and conducting a blood-bath at the pool house, Eli presented Oskar with an option he couldn't refuse, leave with her or try to explain all the dead bodies to people he knew wouldn't believe him. A mafia offer you can't refuse.
Prior to the poolhouse bloodletting, Eli had shown no interest in hunting down and dispatching Oskar's tormentors, which she could have easily done. And she could have grabbed him from the pool and simply left with him without killing anybody.
But I don't blame her one bit for what she did, and I would have done this myself, as she deserved and had earned this chance to be loved and be with the one who loved her, despite the body-count, which I suppose she had long come to terms with.
We shouldn't be squeamish about what and who Eli is, or attempt to apply adult moral standards to justify what she does as it's unnecessary to do so - needs must when the devil drives.
In keeping with her 12 year old psyche, supremely self-absorbed, "Why can't I have anything? Why can't I...", she just did what she saw needed to be done. And I love her to bits for it, and it was the right choice after all.
