I think Drakkar has the appropriate quote for this. The other would be the chat that Eli has with the "hollow woman" who has a "wonderful plan." She teaches Eli that a vampire can be killed with fire.

I'll break open the story and tell you what is there. Then, like the others that have fallen out onto the sand, I will finish with it, and the wind will take it away.

I suppose it is arguable whether or not Hakan died before he became a zombie

All we know is that Hakan's head was very messed up and in poor condition, and that he was mindless.

....spine must be intact in order to parasite to presumably use brain as next alternative host.

Hakan was as dead as a dodo after that fall. His spine must have been broken, along with his skull and numerous other bones.

"He knew the man looked like a monster, that his body had exploded like a water balloon when he hit the ground,..."

"Christ. You should have seen him." "Him... the murderer?" "Yes. It had splattered ... over the whole wall."

The fact that he was later able to get about, seems to imply, like vampires, zombie Hakan had some sort of accelerated healing process going on.
Regardless of Hakan's overwhelming drive to see Eli, and his immunity to pain, physics makes walking on broken legs not possible.

That's a death fall. He bought the farm.

OT - I've noticed that Americans call the "ground floor" the "first floor". How's that work in Sweden? Ground or first?

i thought the house burned because the woman caught fire inside the house, hence the fire spread
... she looks like a kid who has just been overindulgent with chocolate cake or a messy candy bar...
I could just picture Arnold planting a bloody kiss on Oskar telling him "I'll be back."

Both equivalent expressions are used for the entrance level but zero indexing of floors is not very common.
Basically I have never heard anyone (sane) call the floor above ground floor for anything else than second floor regardless of what the entrance level floor is called.
Many elevators are numbered E, 2, 3, 4, etc..

I'm unfamiliar with that system.
In Britain, and in Aust., & NZ floors go G, 1, 2, 3 etc. Or B2, B1, G, 1, 2, if there are basement floors.
I learn something every day. (however trivial). :P
I guess the only difference it makes is if you fell from the 2nd floor window.

I don,t know how is it In Sweden or other countries but in America is no ground floor". It goes like: 1,2,3,4. In Poland we have ground floor, so American second floor, is for us, first one;p. If you don,t know this, then you can be a little bit confused;p

Well, it also makes a difference if you fall from the 1st floor. Falling 1m isn't really that bad.

It depends on position. You can hurt badly if you fall even from 1st floor, or you can even survive chrash from 10000 metres (trust me, it really hapenned)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_fall
Read part "Surviving falls". It probably depends on position of fly, position in which you hit the ground, luck etc.
