He certainly can. I just wanted to see what people thought about it as I'm putting together my ideas and notes for a FF, the blood in a bath could have played an important part but I don't think it will anymore. I will try and think of a reason why Eli used it though for the FF anyway

I am sure the plastic bottles had contained the blood and that the tub had been filled prior to Eli's encounter in the basement. The fact that Eli was concerned that Oskar shouldn't come into the bathroom while she was asleep suggest to me that she didn't want him to see this. Perhaps it is something she only does before traveling. Even then, I'm not sure where that quantity of blood would have been obtained.
I totally agree. Eli could do it before travelling but then there doesn't seem to be a reason why. I can accept that Eli just knows that he needs to sleep in blood, like he knows that he needs and invite in, wasn't told that. The biggest question is where the blood came from and maybe needed more than 1 bath load which is a lot seeing as it's hard enough to get hold of a litre. I can't see Håkan having got hold of it, he's not too good at doing that lol
Håkan could have robbed a blood bank... I could see him returning one night with jugs of blood from the blood bank, or even animal blood, thinking that Eli wouldn't know the difference. After words, maybe Eli would explain to him about the bad things that happen when she is not fed properly. A very unpleasant conversation.
It's possible. Animal blood I think would make more sense as it would be easier to get hold of in a way than having to regularly raid a blood bank. I just wondered what everyone else thought about that aspect of the story. Not that I'm trying to pick holes in the story at all, I just thought it could come in useful for my FF. I will try to explaing it in that anyway. Or I might ignore it as they did in the film. JAL didn't seem too worried about changing it to blankets and maybe one of the reasons was that after he wrote the story he himself thought the blood in the bath can't really be explained

I believe in one of the post here it says that JAL admitted he used it for effect in the novel and it just wouldn't have worked in the film, so he cut it out. So I guess he didn't see it as a major aspect of the story.

I think I know a good way to explain it away now. The bath could have been filled with water originally. Maybe it's too noisy in the day to sleep in a built up area and the water is a good way to block out the sound in as Eli's hearing is so sensitive. After the fight with Håkan Eli was badly injured and bleeding. When Lacke entered the room the bath appeared to be full of blood where infact it was just bloody water. I think Oskar saw Eli's wounds heal after Eli drank Lacke's blood. That sounds reasonable to me

I like your explanation the best of all Angelmaker.
Robbing a blood bank. I can visualise a masked Hakan handing the teller at the blood bank a note demanding 50 litres of blood, in small denominations of 5 litre bottles, before making his getaway.

I don't think I'd agree with that. Eli is not a big person, and the blood in the tub was voluminous and very dark; so dark that Lacke could not see anything through it.

I think there're no better explanation than JAL let his imagination go too wild. He made mistakes sometime, like, no hospital invitation. :D
Once Grandmother gave her a little hood made of red velvet. Because it suited her so well, and she wanted to wear it all the time, she came to be known as Little Red Riding Hood

If I remember rightly, according to the narration that 'someone' was none other than JAL!

That's right. He said:
"And here I come!" And then I heared: Come in, go throught the dores and then they'll open!" That was JAL :)

Ah ok I missed that bit of the commentary. I guess that was a good way of making up for missing it out in the book. If he hadn't of said so during the commentary I would hever have known though. I didn't think of it when I read the book
