No need for spoiler protection any longer...

The hitch-hiker had been given a call, which she had to follow.
I don't know who or what gave her that call, but I think the aim of the call was to restore some kind of balance.

Note that the call came to her at the very moment the truck driver made his first attack to get blood.
But from the beginning Eli was just Eli. Nothing. Anything. And he is still a mystery to me. John Ajvide Lindqvist
