Hardy was great in the film, though he did not look like the character in original BBC series.
Michael Fassbender would have been an interesting choice, but he just would not fit in with the rest of the cast. His rhythm is all wrong for this role. Plus, he's way too overexposed...
At least TA did not cast Channing Tatum as Ricky!
Vitaly
Hywel Bennett as Ricky Tarr in original BBC production.

I thought that Tom Hardy's performance as Ricki Tarr could have easily have been the best one in the film - if not for the towering performances of Oldman and Cumberbatch. In a film full of blindingly talented people, his performance was still a standout. It's difficult to say who was luckier - he or or us.
...the story derives a lot of its appeal from its sense of despair and a darkness in which the love of Eli and Oskar seems to shine with a strange and disturbing light.

You're right, it's remarkable how much he (and others) managed to do with their parts when you think of how much of the film is divided between so many characters. His scenes telling the story about Irina were perfect.

All this recent talk about TTSS made me watch the film again last night. Outstanding movie and outstanding cast. I just wish Ciarán Hinds had more to do. His turn as (Soldier)Roy Bland was painfully small.

I agree, I was waiting for him to have a really great scene but they just had too many talented people packed into one movie. That's not a problem I can remember encountering before... usually something of the opposite
