Could Gary Oldman win an Oscar for TTSS?

Oscar Watch: Could Gary Oldman win an Oscar for Tinker Tailor...? Marc Lee spies new hope for Gary Oldman and 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’ .

With all the love lavished on Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy in the Bafta nominations this week, could it be that the Oscar field has just widened slightly?

Suddenly it seems possible that, after the Oscar nominations are announced next Tuesday, members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences may be more inclined to consider the merits of Tomas Alfredson’s magisterial adaptation of the beige-and-brooding John le Carré spy story — and particularly Gary Oldman’s quietly mesmerising central performance as George Smiley.

As well as Oldman’s nomination for Best Actor and Alfredson’s for Best Director, Tinker Tailor… got the nod in nine other Bafta categories, including Best Film and Outstanding British Film, though it is highly unlikely that it will overtake The Artist and The Descendants, the current frontrunners for the best-picture Oscar.

Not that that is likely to trouble Tim Bevan, founder of Working Title Films and producer of Tinker Tailor…, who this week rounded on the Academy Awards, denouncing the “hoopla” that surrounds them and suggesting that they have become too cynical. For a truer picture of the state of the art, he said, look to the Baftas.

Bevan also called for the awards season to be shortened by the simple expedient of bringing forward the Oscar ceremony to January 20 (it’s on February 26 this year). This, he said, would reduce the hype and the jockeying for position by the studios that now occupies three months of the year.

Hollywood’s second-biggest awards, the Golden Globes, which took place last Sunday, failed to improve the Oscar odds for either The Descendants or The Artist because both films won — the former picking up Best Motion Picture (Drama), the latter Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical). Similarly, George Clooney’s performance in The Descendants and Jean Dujardin’s in The Artist were both honoured. Which all felt rather as if the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, who decide the Globes, were having their cake and eating it.

And their choice of Martin Scorsese as Best Director for Hugo, his mish-mash of an adventure story for kids and hymn to early filmmaking for cinephiles, just looks bizarre. The chances of Oscar making the same pick are almost nil.

On the other hand, Meryl Streep’s performance in The Iron Lady, which won her Best Actress, and Octavia Spencer’s in The Help, which bagged Best Supporting Actress, are looking increasingly like shoo-ins come February 26.

As I watched the scene where Smiley talks to the empty chair as though Karla were sitting in it, I knew that I was watching an Oscar-worthy performance. The problem is that the Oscar itself is not worthy. Winning an Oscar is not a measure of filmmaking excellence, and not winning is not evidence of the lack of excellence. I think that Oldman will probably win a BAFTA, but an Oscar? Who knows what it takes to win an Oscar? The criteria are anything but clear. What is clear is that Oldman turned in a performance as Smiley that few actors could equal.
...the story derives a lot of its appeal from its sense of despair and a darkness in which the love of Eli and Oskar seems to shine with a strange and disturbing light.

Oscar itself may not be worthy, however since Oldman never won one before I'm sure he won't pull a Brando and refuse the statue when the time comes. Unfortunately, there's so few "awards" out there that truly acknowledge recognition for brilliant acting...BAFTA is one of them and Oldman is a shoe-in...but honestly Oscar would not hurt either....I'm positive that it feels good to have " Oscar winner" next to your name.

It's good for the film, as well. Wolfchild is right about the Academy Awards not being a definitive measure of excellence, but the award (and even a nomination) can be very meaningful for independent and foreign films that can't afford television spots or lack big name stars who can promote them---the award shows are basically free commercials.

I doubt Oldman will win the Oscar this time around. Jean Dujardin seems a good bet, with Clooney having an outside chance of a win. However, Oldman will always have "Academy Award nominee" next to his name in the future, which seems to count for something---you see it mentioned in the trailer for Firth (winner) and Hurt (nominee).

I'm pulling for Gary Oldman all the way :-D

Brad Pitt - to be fair I haven't seen Moneyball or The Tree of Life...so I can't comment on his peformances
George Clooney - The Descendants was good...but still Clooney being Clooney, didn't really see anything special there
Jean Dujardin - Fantastic in The Artist...if there was any other person I would want to win this, it would be him

I don't think Oldman will win...but god I'm pulling for the guy to win :) He's got my support all the way

Still keeping fingers crossed for Gary Oldman....There's still time for the right thing to happen.
Whatever happens TTSS was a great film and it was a totally satisfying experience watching Tomas Alfredson and company give their all.

Well today's the day

Best of luck to Gary Oldman...but also best of luck to both Peter Straughn and Alberto Iglesias for their respective nominations (Adapted Screenplay and Score)...Here's hoping one of those three can take something home for TTSS
