A Sharp Intake of Breathe...

Post by Harls » Wed Oct 13, 2010 1:10 pm

So there I was, standing in the communal lift (elevator) at work, when it stops at the next floor down and in steps Lina... (it wasn't, of course, unless she has her Accounts done by a firm in London, but my word, this girl was the spitting image of our favourite skådespelerska - the only way I could tell it wasn't her was by the absence of the moles on her left cheek.

(To be fair, my comparison was based on Lina's appearance at the Empire Awards, so the girl in the lift was obviously older than her). Suffices to say, upon first glance, my reaction was akin to the above smiley, coupled with a sharp intake of breath which in turn was followed by an uncomfortable silence for the rest of the journey down.

Which leads me to a question; what would YOU do if you were fortunate enough to meet someone you admire, and if you have already met that person(s), what was your reaction?

In my case, although it wasn't actually Lina, I reckon I would have blown any chance of being able to carry on a sensible conversation with her as I'd be a quivering wreck... :?

I would say hi and thank her for the film. If I had my wits I would have asked her about her plans and wishes for future acting.

I spent an evening drinking with Quentin Tarantino (even 'though I don't really admire him) and am on friendly terms with several important members of the Scandinavian metal scene. So, in a nutshell, even if Lina herself crossed my way, I wouldn't keel over. I'd just say hello and maybe offer her a drink. After all, it's not like Lina is a super-celeb that has to fight paparazzi all day long.

I really don't know...

Perhaps I should invite Ian McKellen out for tea and find out? :)

Therein, I guess, lies the answer - I think the fact that it was so unexpected knocked me sideways. I've met (and drank with) a few 'celebrities' (both minor and major) over the years, but I've always been in a position where I haven't been surprised by them and therefore haven't been on edge in their company. Anyway in the lift, I had time to study her face more closely, and when I say she was the spitting image, I'm not elaborating - her eyes (the eyes, the eyes...) were the same, and so were the turned-down corners of the mouth (couldn't see any dimples as she wasn't smiling - probably because I was staring so hard at her).

Mind you, there is a positive - I get to see a 'Lina-Like' at work now...

I think the problem lies within getting to say something that goes beyond "Hello and goodbye". As long as the person in question is not accompanied by rabid gorillas: Impudence wins.

I met Nick Cave once, and I cracked a joke which he laughed at.

I also bumped into (literally) Pete Doherty and called him a knobhead at a libertines gig before they were signed.

I'm sure he's quite used to being called that, and a lot worse, nowadays... :D

I live only 6 miles away from Falun, so I've visited the city quite a few times, but I have not yet seen Lina.
However, if I did meet her, I would probably say hello, praise her to the sky and if time was sufficient, ask her to join me for a cup of coffee.

But don't show her your ink. As excellent as it is, I can see no way that it wouldn't creep her out. ;)
...the story derives a lot of its appeal from its sense of despair and a darkness in which the love of Eli and Oskar seems to shine with a strange and disturbing light.
