Quotes About Love, Fitting for LTROI

Post by a_contemplative_life » Fri Mar 12, 2010 1:21 am

This film is about love, so this seems an appropriate topic. :)

I will start with a few from Leo Buscaglia. He wrote a book called Living, Loving & Learning that I read back in the '80's and I'm not sure why, but recently I've gotten the urge to go re-read it. Maybe I will.

A single rose can be my garden... a single friend, my world.

Love is always bestowed as a gift - freely, willingly and without expectation. We don't love to be loved; we love to love.

Love is always open arms. If you close your arms about love you will find that you are left holding only yourself.

Happiness and love are just a choice away.

Some lyrics from Kate Wolf.

From “Early Morning Melody.”

You’ve given me so many songs,
Ones that kept me going on when I’d wonder why
Weaving through the busy days,
They were colors in the misty haze, Like rainbow rhymes
Reminding me that even prison walls
Turn to dust and fall before the open sky.
And love can find you in the darkest hour,
Touch you lightly as a flower on colored wings
Like a butterfly,
Like a butterfly.

From “Looking Back At You.”

WIPE AWAY THE TEARS, IT'S FUNNY HOW LOVE'S DONE
JUST WHEN YOU LET IT GO IT COMES BACK ON THE RUN
IF I CAN GIVE YOU ANYTHING TO TAKE ALONG WITH YOU
IT'S ALL THE LOVE I FOUND LOOKING BACK AT YOU.
NOW I SEE IN YOUR EYES THE LOVE I ALWAYS KNEW
BUT FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME IT'S IN ME
LOOKING BACK AT YOU.

From “Shining.”

YOU GET THAT LOOK IN YOUR EYES, LOVE, IT'S SOMETHING I CAN'T NAME
I'VE SEEN THAT LOOK BEFORE JUST NOT ON SOMETHING TAME
IT'S A LITTLE LOST AND LONELY, A SPIRIT BURNING FREE,
THAT MAKES MY HEART GLAD IT'S SHINING DOWN ON ME.
SHINING IN THE MORNING, SHINING IN THE EVENING
SHINING IN THE SUMMER AND THE WINTER TOO
MAKES ME SING WITH A GLAD HEART, SING IN MY SORROW
SING FOR THOSE BLUE EYES THAT BURN SO TRUE.

I'll break open the story and tell you what is there. Then, like the others that have fallen out onto the sand, I will finish with it, and the wind will take it away.

From Kahlil Gibran

When love beckons to you, follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you, yield to him,
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
And when he speaks to you believe in him,
Thought his voice may shatter your dreams
as the north wind lays waste the garden.

For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you.
Even as he is for your growth
so is he for your pruning.
Even as he ascends to your height
and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,
so shall he descend to your roots
and shake them in their clinging to the earth.

All these things shall love do unto you
That you may know the secrets of your heart,
And in the knowledge become a fragment of Life’s heart.

But if in your fear you would seek only love’s peace and love’s pleasure,
Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness
and pass out of love’s threshing-floor,
Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh,
But not all of your laughter,
And weep, but not all of your tears.

Love gives naught but itself
And takes naught but from itself.
Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;
For love is sufficient unto love.
We never stop reading, although every book comes to an end, just as we never stop living, although death is certain. (Roberto Bolaño)

Good choice PeteMork, he would've been who I would have quoted if I could find my copy of 'The Prophet'

A nice topic ;-). How about this:

This love
So violent
So fragile
So tender
So hopeless
This love
As beautiful as the day
And as wretched as the weather
When the weather is wretched

This love
So real
This love
So beautiful
So happy
So joyous
And so ridiculous
Trembling with fear
Like a child in the dark
And so sure of itself
Like a tranquil man in the quiet of the night
This love
Which made others afraid
Which made them gossip
Which drained the colour from their cheeks
This love
Watched for
Because we watched for them
Snared, wounded, trampled, finished, denied, forgotten
Because we snared, wounded, trampled, finished, denied, forgot it

This love
Entire
Still so alive
Shining
This is yours
This is mine
This love
Which is always new
And which never changes
Real like a plant
Quivering like a bird
Warm and as alive as the summer
We can both
Go and come back
We can forget
And fall asleep
And wake up
To suffer old age
Fall asleep again
To dream to death
Awake
To smile and laugh
Young again
Our love endures
Obstinate as a mule
As alive as the desire
As cruel as the memory
As stupid as the regret
As tender as the memory
As cold as marble
As beautiful as the day
As delicate as an infant
It watches us
Smiling
And speaks to us
Without saying a word
And I
I listen to it
Trembling
And I cry
I cry for you
I cry for myself
And I beg you
For yourself
For me
And for all those who love
And who are loved
Yes
I cry to it
For you
For me
And for all the others
I do not know
Stay there
There where you are
There where you were before
Stay there
Don't move
Don't go away
We who are loved
We have forgotten you
Do not forget us
We had only you on this earth
Do not let us grow cold
Further and further away every day
It doesn't matter where
Give us a sign of life
In a nook in the woods
In the forest of memory
Suddenly arise
Take us by the hand
And save us

I have often remarked that some many things in LTROI are so ambiguous that is like a mirror: When people try to fill in the blanks, they end up filling them in with themselves.

Talk is cheap, like 'I love you';
What you say's not what you do.
What you do is the real thing;
How you play, not what you sing.

Love is free, or so they say;
Somehow it will make you pay.
Somehow you will earn the trust;
What you pay is what you must.

Trust is fragile, trust is precious;
Only lose it, once forget it,
All your love will turn to dust;
All your money can't buy trust.

Quotes from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince. Struan has brought this up elsewhere-

Chapter 21, The Little Prince Befriends the Fox.

http://home.pacific.net.hk/~rebylee/text/prince/21.html

What does that mean-- 'tame'?"
"It is an act too often neglected," said the fox. It means to establish ties."
"'To establish ties'?"
"Just that," said the fox. "To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who is just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. And you, on your part, have no need of me. To you, I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world..."

******

But if you tame me, it will be as if the sun came to shine on my life. I shall know the sound of a step that will be different from all the others. Other steps send me hurrying back underneath the ground. Yours will call me, like music, out of my burrow. And then look: you see the grain-fields down yonder? I do not eat bread. Wheat is of no use to me. The wheat fields have nothing to say to me. And that is sad. But you have hair that is the colour of gold. Think how wonderful that will be when you have tamed me! The grain, which is also golden, will bring me back the thought of you. And I shall love to listen to the wind in the wheat..."

*******

And he went back to meet the fox.
"Goodbye," he said.
"Goodbye," said the fox. "And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye."
"What is essential is invisible to the eye," the little prince repeated, so that he would be sure to remember.
"It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important."
"It is the time I have wasted for my rose--" said the little prince, so that he would be sure to remember.
"Men have forgotten this truth," said the fox. "But you must not forget it. You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed. You are responsible for your rose..."
"I am responsible for my rose," the little prince repeated, so that he would be sure to remember.

I'll break open the story and tell you what is there. Then, like the others that have fallen out onto the sand, I will finish with it, and the wind will take it away.

As St Francis of Assisi prays.

Lord, grant that I might not so much seek to be loved as to love.

If Eli ever prayed, she would have prayed to love again.

For me, personally, I would pray that I will continually seek to love.
Låt den rätte komma in in both its printed and celluloid form is a slow acting poison. You will be poisoned white. White from arsenic and innocence.

To love someone deeply gives you strength. Being loved by someone deeply gives you courage. - Lao Tzu

かわいさ余って憎さ百倍。

"Love and hatred are very close to each other."

A Japanese idiom.
Att fly är livet, att dröja döden.

Do not ask why; ask why not.

I like that this topic was posted on my birthday, and wish I'd thought of it.

"You see, it is the love with which you do things that radiates; it is not the things that you do. Among your peoples this has been much misunderstood, for people look to see if there is some service that can be their spiritual gift to the world. They are looking for a dramatic role to play, to teach or to heal or to prophesy. And yet these things are forever secondary to the primary mission of each of you upon this particular planet in this particular density at this time. The mission before each of you is simply to address all of that which comes to you with an open heart, just that. And yet just that is the work of lifetime upon lifetime, for how can a person in a heavy illusion such as you now enjoy be fearless? It is not within the physical body to be fearless. It is not within the earthly brain, that choice-maker, to be fearless. Indeed, only the foolish are fearless, and yet the teacher known to you as Jesus the Christ has said that it is only to the foolish that the wisdom comes. It is only to those who live as little children that the Kingdom is inherited.

How can a sensible, sane person, gazing upon a rather dangerous world, feel no fear? This is the crux. Here is the center. Just here, where fear shuts the door of the heart, here lies the opportunity to learn...what each fears in an archetypical sense is the cessation of being. When one feels threatened, those emotions which do not have intelligence but are simply instinctual rise up to defend and protect. And it takes a great deal of care and discipline and perseverance to teach the self to lay down its arms and to be peaceful with the self.

Each of you has the issues of all the world within you...it is our humble opinion that the most efficient way to bring the world to peace is to learn peace within the self, for as you think, as you are, so your universe in toto is also, for your consciousness is as a field; and each bit of fear that you are able to let drop, each time that you find your heart expanding, the consciousness of your planet is being lightened. There is no lag time between the open heart of self and service to the planet, that lightening of the consciousness of planet Earth.

You came among these entities of flesh and bone. You took that flesh upon yourself and buried yourself in a world of shadows because you wished to make a difference. You heard the sorrow of those who dwell with you now. And you wished to stand among them as a witness and as one who was a channel for love. This is your great chance. These are the days you hoped and prepared for, and now the time is upon you, and how quickly, my friends, it is going. Is it not?”
