It was a happy ending. Of this one chapter of their lives.

If you compare Oskar at the ending to where Oskar was at the beginning of the film, then I would have to see this as a happy ending. During the course of the film something happens to Oskar and he is now on his way to something better compared to what he had at the beginning. The clues are there in the visuals we get at the beginning and the end. Think of the moving train. The windows in the opening and closing scenes. The shot of the snow which frames the film, and how we get beyond that forbidding snow at the very end. Darkness versus bright sunshine. Oskar's first line in the film is "squeal like a pig." His last line is given in morse code. :)

Yup. Happy ending.
This you say is very interesting, about the clues in the visuals and all that

That's inexcusable! Now you have to watch the movie at least 10 times in a row as punishment

It won't be today though, I don't have the time, some time during the weekend will fit perfectly. I will get bored to death though :D Hey, maybe we can do it together, have a LTROI watch day! :D Big movement!

I see it as a happy ending too. I did not worry about what happens next. Eli and Oskar are together and happy. Now their lives continue and as I saw the movie I felt I was saying goodbye to two friends who are starting their journey. I was happy for them.
Wow you guys are super infected! I want to take the challenge too he he. I have only seen the movie like 5 times. Last time I saw it. It was at the end of 2010.

It occurs to me that Blade Runner is another film in which there is an escape by the protagonists from darkness to light at the end. In fact, there is more light in the last minute or so of Blade Runner than in the entire movie. Also, interestingly, the female protagonist in BR is not human in the full sense of the word. ;)

Blade Runner is one of my favorite movies EVER. You're right, it's very dark and oppressive, always raining nonstop... Only at the end, when the last Nexus 6 (the "bad guy") dies, the sun finally rises.

About happy endings... I just remembered something I read long ago somewhere. It said, more or less, this: A happy ending is knowing where you have to put the word "END". All stories end tragically, with pain and death, so if you want to get a smile it's better to put "END" while everything is going well.

I thought about the movie Grave of the Fireflies it remains me of the end to Let The Right One In. The brother and his sister are also able to leave behind the world that rejected them to just like Eli and Oskar. Together they continue their journey together.
