And it is not completely correct that Eli didn't know the value of stuff. It seems he was right on spot when he offered Tommy money for some blood.
Then it must be experience with money, most people vapire or not do not come to the need of bying a nuclear power plant.
As even Tommy himself notice as Eli shakes the box with rasorblades: He has done this before..

Yes. I imagine Eli might have lived with a barber for some time, in the old days when blood-letting still was fashionable, and learnt the practice from him.
But from the beginning Eli was just Eli. Nothing. Anything. And he is still a mystery to me. John Ajvide Lindqvist

One might imagine that Eli's ability to have her egg appraised by a knowledgeable antiquities dealer could be quite limited.

First, I want to say hello to everyone! I've been gone for a while, but I'm not dead

WOW I never would have guessed it was CGI. It looked so real!!
We fell in love despite our differences...and once we did, something rare and beautiful was created.

Welcome back.

...the story derives a lot of its appeal from its sense of despair and a darkness in which the love of Eli and Oskar seems to shine with a strange and disturbing light.

Caught me between edits
I can't help it, thanks to the movie Eli will always be a "her" in my mind ._.

And it seems I'm not the only one

Eli is always "she" for me. I blame Lina

I wonder if the difference between those of us for whom Eli is "she" and those that say "he" is if they are most influenced by the film or the novel?
For me, the novel is most important, and for me Eli is "he".

I was influenced by the movie. The movie gives no clue that Eli used to be a boy. It was almost a month after I saw the movie ( a few times) that I found out Eli used to be a he. By then it was ingrained in my mind that Eli was a she. Plus in the Lina interview she calls Eli a she and said Eli would be a good friend if she was real. In the book JAL didn't refer to Eli as a he until the last half of the book. So for me Eli is always a she/Lina because of the movie/interview. Sometimes I try to think of Eli as post op gender change, but that thought doesn't really sit well with me. One example is Chaz Bono, everyone calls her a him now and I don't even know if Chaz had surgery to change anything. I also think that even though Eli thinks she is neither boy or girl she leans more towards a girl because in the movie she dresses and acts like a girl. If I had read the book before the movie I would probably think of Eli as a he now because the book gives no visual reference like in the movie. Does anyone still else think of Eli as a she because they saw her first in the movie?

I'm with metoo, and I think we're in the minority here

For me Eli is a boy, and I go by the novel. Lina was a wonderful actress in the part, but as different as she and Kåre look from the characters in the book I think of the film as being "inspired by", not "based on" the novel. Even in the movie, I think of them as Lina and Kåre. And it seems weirdest and weirder the more I see people referring to Eli as she... but that's just me.
