May be I did not lurk in this forum long enough :?:

I found something in an old thread, in JAL's own word:

JAL: In my opinion, this is because as soon as someone is engaged in a love story, when there’s love at play in one way or another, then you really, really want these two lovers to get each other and at any cost. You know it’s like, Eli – clear all obstacles, kill them all... Oscar – get the knife, do something... As long as the two lovers get each other, but there needs to be distance and obstacles between them so that you can like them.

My feelings is mixed with Lacke. I do feel sadness when he lost his friend and his girlfriend, but i root for Eli. Personally, i feel more sadness for Eli than Lacke, so Eli wins by a landslide. Anyone who went through with what Eli did, gets my sympathy above anything. When it comes down to Lacke being eaten by Eli, it's really a tragic.

I agree. In the film Lacke is presented as "a bum" - an alcoholic carrying a briefcase with one stamp and a lot of air. He takes everything for granted and gives nothing back to those around him (I am going by the impression of him in the film - in the book he is a little more sympathetic and I got the feeling that this could have been Oskar's future self we were seeing if his life did not change with Eli).
Yet there is the feeling in the back of my mind that we should feel something for him - his best friend is murdered with the corpse being found casually thrown into an iced river, his lover is attacked by cats and seems delirious until she bursts into flames. We should be on his side as human beings. But the story is presented as about Oskar and Eli and their love is what shines through. When Eli is threatened with Lacke's knife, WE feel threatened. When he tries to open the curtain WE become like Oskar in that moment.

I swear, if I was doing a film course at a university, there would be enough material in this film and the book to warrant three or four essays on their own!

Yep. If you want to write more you should probably start making comparsions to other movies and books. Or at least make some cultural or historical references.
