I think this wasn't anything like the first time he had killed someone. The argument he and Eli had after she kills Jocke suggests Hakan did most of the murdering.crazychristina wrote:Hakan was having some problem dealing with the fact that he'd just killed someone.
First morse scene in Eli's flat

I agree. The film leads us to believe that Håkan was successful in procuring blood for Eli at least once previous to the story. In the scene where Håkan prepares his murder kit, you can see that the rinse water comes out of the jug looking distinctly pinkish. Also, you can see blood stains on the inside of the case.Ash wrote:I think this wasn't anything like the first time he had killed someone. ...the story derives a lot of its appeal from its sense of despair and a darkness in which the love of Eli and Oskar seems to shine with a strange and disturbing light.

Re: First morse scene in Eli's flat
Hakan is the character who is very different in the book/LTROI film/LMI film. In the book he's fairly new at the job (and that's where he goes to town to save a life) and also that Eli doesn't need a helper most of the time, only when s/he wakes up from a long sleep and is too weak. She says several times in the book that she is too weak 'for that' (to kill). In LTROI film he appears to take it all in a days work and the extent of the relationship is more ambiguous. In LMI of course it's clearly long term and he does most of the killng.

Given what Håkan is, a boy hungry pedophile, it is hard to muster much sympathy for him. He sort of put himself in a bad position before meeting Eli and would have likely been a problem for many more kids if Eli hadn't recruited him.Ash wrote:I think she enjoyed her power over Hakan and the fact she could order him around and do what she liked.
Poor Hakan was living in the worst of worlds imaginable. Infatuated with and murdering for a 12 year old vampire who really had no feelings for him.
Like an abused housewife, he stayed because he had nowhere else to go and had no life outside of her.
Re: First morse scene in Eli's flat
I'm thinking Håkan had a lot more experience and was in fact quite good at his job if you take into account the amount of cash and valuables they were hoarding. In the book they had suitcases full of money in all denominations. It's not hard to assume she got the egg from Vamp Lord but not the currency. If Eli wasn't lying to Oskar then maybe she just didn't say it came from Håkan, like a little white lie.Wolfchild wrote:The film leads us to believe that Håkan was successful in procuring blood for Eli at least once previous to the story. "Can we die?" "Of course we can." Eli put his hand on his heart, felt the slow beats. Maybe it was because he was a child. Maybe that was why he hadn't put an end to it. The pangs of conscience were weaker than his will to live.

This is probably more suited to the Novel forums but since it was brought up here... I'm on my second reading of the book (from cover to cover) and I'm realizing that JAL's Hakan, while he is a pedophile in every sense of the word, is not the sexual predator most people say he is. He has not one, but two chances to umm... indulge himself and in both cases he is actually repulsed. The fact is he felt in love with, and lusted for Eli who for obvious reasons wouldn't reciprocate unless there was no other choice.rgh wrote:Given what Håkan is, a boy hungry pedophile, it is hard to muster much sympathy for him.
