Ever seen Ned Beatty in Deliverance?
Piggy doesn't have to necessarily mean you're fat lol.

Well, the way I imagine it, Eli and Oskar are happy forever being vampires, working seasonally at a blood-bank with poor book-keeping skills.

I always thought that "Deliverance" was the inspiration for the "sqeal like a pig" line in LTROI.Luftwaffles wrote:Ever seen Ned Beatty in Deliverance?

Although I think its horrible, I do believe it was intentional
Just how the film industry goes i suppose.
I think if Oskar was a bit chubbier or bigger boned he wouldnt have looked as weak and fragile if that makes sense?
But i think this kid would have made the perfect Oskar, especially when Oskar fights back

Perhaps he had a certain little vampire cheering him on giving him the courage

To escape criticism - do nothing, say nothing, be nothing.
Better a diamond with a flaw than a pebble without.
Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang except those that sang best.

Interesting you should mention "Deliverance". I used to work with a fellow who knew the actor who played one of the rednecks. He said that he was his next-door neighbor. The one who didn't have very many teeth. I would have to assume that he wasn't like the one in the movie.Nightrider wrote:I always thought that "Deliverance" was the inspiration for the "sqeal like a pig" line in LTROI.Luftwaffles wrote:Ever seen Ned Beatty in Deliverance?

A thought just occurred to me. He lives only about 30 miles west of me, and occasionally I have to go through that area to visit relatives. I'll have to remember not to stop when passing through that area.
PS: I think you're right about the "squeal like a pig" line.

John Boorman had a stroke of genius when he cast the rednecks. Most of them except for Bill McKinney(the one who assaults Ned Beatty) were not professional actors. It worked out just perfectly. McKinney is an excellent actor who appeared in a lot of Clint Eastwood movies.gary13136 wrote:Interesting you should mention "Deliverance". The Banjo Kid(who was not handicapped and did not play banjo) sells his autographed photos on E-Bay....Just a bit of trivia about one of my favorite films.

Hey! They're not "red-necks" (so offensive!). They're...Agricultural Engineers.Ash wrote:Remember these red-necks?![]()

Re: Why not a fat Oskar?
I have to agree with "cherished memories". There are a lot of interested parties in a film, and most of them are financial. There is a scene in the "Last Action Hero" where the child protagonist tries to convince Arnold that he is actually in a movie because "A girl this hot does not work in Block Buster video."cherished memories wrote:Although I think its horrible, I do believe it was intentional![]()

Sorry about mentioning the "Last Action Hero", but I thought it was appropriate. Also for those non-US people or young ones, Block Buster was a dominant movie rental company in US.
Re: Why not a fat Oskar?
I guess if Eli was played by a (effeminate) boy, and Oskar was chubby, the film would have lost much of its appeal to audiences.
And I admit the same would apply to me.
So I'm not so much pointing fingers at others, as questioning my own prejudices about what I view as appealing and what I want to see on the screen.
It's probably my reaction (over-reaction) to the parade of "beautiful" people being presented as normal in films and the media, to the exclusion the normal us.
Eli and Osakr were (are) physically beautiful, but the film/story doesn't hang on that fact. And I think that presenting them as "esthetically unappealing", would have given the viewer an added dimension to deal with. More intellectually and emotionally challenging. That's what cinema is supposed to do.

Re: Why not a fat Oskar?
I think TA had a certain vision of Eli and Oskar and knew that this vision was critically important to the success of the film. Leandersson and Hedebrant were what he was looking for, and mirroring Oskar's chubbiness was a minor point that took a back seat to the chemistry he sensed between his leads.
