A Follow Up Book?

Re: A Follow Up Book?
I gave this some thought the other night and i reckon i would like a follow up book but its probably because althrough i liked the ending of the first book ,part of me wants a definite answer from the the author as to what became of Eli and Oskar in their new life together.I think i just want John to say ..and they lived happily ever after. The book got to me on a such an emotional level that i need to know that those two kids are gonna be alright before i can put it to bed ..if that makes any sense to you people.

Perhaps that is what the epilogue will do.bri29 wrote:I gave this some thought the other night and i reckon i would like a follow up book but its probably because althrough i liked the ending of the first book ,part of me wants a definite answer from the the author as to what became of Eli and Oskar in their new life together.I think i just want John to say ..and they lived happily ever after. The book got to me on a such an emotional level that i need to know that those two kids are gonna be alright before i can put it to bed ..if that makes any sense to you people.

No, I don't think there should be a sequel for this book, they should leave it like it is.
It's already beautiful as it is, if they went back to write another book it be another vampire love story.

Personally, I don't think a follow-up would work. I think JAL did the right thing by leaving the story open-ended because although we all want a happy ending for Oskar and Eli, I really can't see how there could be. I'm sure these points and more have been covered in the Fan Fiction section, I'm just seeing this from my own perspective; Oskar told Eli he wanted to be with her, but not like her, so short of him changing his mind and being turned, which I very much doubt, what other route could they take? Giving your all to someone means that there are a lot of things in life that you would miss out on, which in turn could cause resentment in Oskar as he grows older. Of course nobody knows how a vampire's mind works, but how would Eli feel knowing that while she's on her 'down time' Oskar could be out and about playing the field - is Eli the jealous type? She's certainly protective of Oskar as we know, so while he has the chance to break out of his isolation at some point in his life, Eli doesn't have this option and would probably kill to protect what she has with him, which again would cause resentment between them. I'd prefer to think that after a long and happy life together, they just one day cease to exist - it's a cop-out I know, but the alternatives are just too sad to contemplate...bri29 wrote:I gave this some thought the other night and i reckon i would like a follow up book but its probably because althrough i liked the ending of the first book ,part of me wants a definite answer from the the author as to what became of Eli and Oskar in their new life together.I think i just want John to say ..and they lived happily ever after. The book got to me on a such an emotional level that i need to know that those two kids are gonna be alright before i can put it to bed ..if that makes any sense to you people.
Best to let sleeping vampires lie methinks...

I see what your saying Harls, but for me that just isnt enough closure. If Oskar stays human he will end up being just another Harkan and Eli will move on when he has died.Oskar did turn Eli,s offer down of making himself like her/him but that was before he was saved and he made the decision to run away.So perhaps there is some scope there for him to change his mind about that, if there is enough love between them it would be a no brainer in my book.

Having just read this post about the epilogue in the Novel section:

I think I'll reserve judgement. I have enjoyed reading everyone's comments in this topic though.editrice wrote:Well, I've read it. And I won't tell you anything about it.![]()
However, I can say that for me it didn't destroy the magic of the novel itself one bit.
I'll let you know when it's available in Swedish!
