Gustav Mahler

Is this a common name in Sweden? The choice of the character's name was intentional I think. The Czech conducter-composer wrote a set of songs titled Kindertotenlieder or "Songs on the death of children."

I'll break open the story and tell you what is there. Then, like the others that have fallen out onto the sand, I will finish with it, and the wind will take it away.

Gustav is a fairly common name, 97331 hits on Ratsit.se.
Mahler is a very uncommon surname, only 39 hits.

You are probably right that the choice of name isn't coincidental.
But from the beginning Eli was just Eli. Nothing. Anything. And he is still a mystery to me. John Ajvide Lindqvist
