It felt like her brain was about to boil over from the heat when she saw a blurry, black snake or arm or tentacle stretch down from the sky and grab the body in front of her. A faint sizzling was heard when the dark appendage coiled around the blue-clid limbs which were then lifted straight up.
There was silence, for a moment. Then she heard the chewing. Somewhere far above her head she heard bones cracking and flesh being grinded to a pulp.

The rock face to his right had come alive and now stretched out above the road. A few meters ahead, the sharply etched rock running beside the road ended in a gelatinous mass pressing out from invisible cracks and forming a body twice as tall as the truck. [...] He saw that which had emerged from the cliff disappear in the direction of Kapellskär on tall spider legs. It was as big as several trucks and the snow on the trees alongside the road melted and the steam was sucked into the dry body.

The entrance to the port area was illuminated by spotlights and Vera saw the plumes of steam rising from the trees and swirling into the body of darkness quickly crawling forth on thin legs, tentacles. It had no form, no clear outline, it was burning darkness in motion.
As well as the "scouts" serving it:
Vera had been present at a number of surgeries and autopsies. The thing huddling beside the bed most of all looked like part of an intestine. Or a white snail. Four thick spider legs stuck out from its sides. When Vera turned on the light it lifted the front of its body and Vera saw that it had no eyes but nevertheless a mouth and two long antennae.
It was a digestive organ or part of a digestive organ with the ability to move and chew. The antennae twitched in Vera's direction and she didn't know if it saw her or merely perceived her presence. Either way, it knew she was there.
