escape plan

Post by gkmoberg1 » Sat Aug 24, 2019 5:00 am

One day he couldn't take it any more. Karl decided to set out on something new. Something completely new. He had fantasized about running away and opening a bakery cart in downtown Amsterdam. It would be cash only. No credit cards or computers or Apple Pay. Just baked goods in exchange for a little money. Lower the stress of life, he mused. in other words: get back to a simpler life and keep it simple.

But Amsterdam was too far away from Rinkeby. He needed to choose a closer place. Why not something where at least he understood the language? Looking about, he thought of Malmö . It was at the far end of the country, yet at least they spoke what he knew. But it was very built up, he worried. And as well, he needed something that yet had more appreciation for the simpler life. "No, a built up metro area will not do," he whispered to his cat. And with that confession, he knew Amsterdam was similarly not possible. His dream, his 'happy fantasy' (as he liked to call it), was just that: a dream, a day dream to use as a distraction when life was not going well.

Yet he kept with it. He did not want to let it be the case that his happy fantasy would remain for ever a day dream. He continued to look. After more pondering he chose Växjö. On the web (https://www.vaxjo.se/), they advertise themselves as 'Europe's greenest city' {Europas grönaste stad} . That sounded good. Looking at a map, he saw they had parks. Again, that sounded good. As well, hadn't Eli met up with Håken in Växjö? Maybe he could end up in the same park. He'd rather not encounter Håken, but Eli might be interesting to discover, yes?

So, he packed up. He wrote a note to his employer. He wrote a similar note to his cohabitant; she would not likely not find it for a week. Looking at the two notes he sighed when he saw they were almost interchangeable. Which to leave for Sophia? Which to leave for Lennart? Oh yes, he thought, if this is the case then truly my life is far from what I want. I want close relationships, ones that did not end up resembling the tiresome relationship he had with his employer.

He mailed both, even though he could have left one on the counter next to the stove. And then Karl simply wandered off "stage left" and set out to start over.

It wasn't going to be easy. He knew this and harbored no fantasies that a "life reboot" would be easy. "Far from easy," he explained to his cat Lucky. But it would be fresh air. Baked goods and fresh air. What more was needed? Lucky seemed to agree.

Hmm... Out of the frying pan into the fire?

Things never go as planned.

But we all know that. After all, if things went as planned, fan-fictions would be rather dull. Right?

Fortunately for us, in the case of Karl, he is throwing himself into making a large change with having done very little in the way of planning. Inspiration, perhaps that is what Karl has. But this is not the same a planning. Methinks he has leapt rather quickly from whatever pains he felt he needed to free himself from. Worse, he's living in a take on the world that is based on JAL's creations ... what could go wrong?

“It does not do to leave a live dragon out of your calculations, if you live near him.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien

“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”
― Benjamin Franklin

and of course

“If you don't know where you are going, you'll end up someplace else.”
― Yogi Berra

Sounds like Karl is in for smooth sailing.

That's why you need to have a plan B. (and plan C, and D, then E...)
