Eli is understandably unused to being able to relax a little - she has surely never been in less immediate danger since being turned. I fear Dawson is far too trusting of human nature. In his shoes I wouldn't even hypothetically consider making Eli's condition known to anyone else save in case of dire need, even with a cure. In some ways my thoughts on this matter are the opposite of what one might expect from a scientist.

You're right. But that's what makes fan fiction so much fun: trying to make the illogical logical.

At this point, Dawson can no longer be the objective scientist he has alway been. Love has gotten in the way. He has, in the space of a few weeks, changed his time table from 75 years, to a mere 10. You're right. He does need to be more careful. But, other than the humbling experience of losing his wife and son, he has led a relatively sheltered life. Perhaps Eli, with her more realistic experiences with the dark side, will be able to warn him in time. Dawson has also failed to realize that, once the kids are in the news in 10 years, Oskar's true identity will almost certainly be discovered and Dawson would, in all likelihood, be sent to prison for child abduction.

Another neat story. Eli's musings on how a real parent like God would be arrested for child abuse reminded me of Tyler Derdin's speech in Fight Club, "We are all God's unwanted children Sometimes the world makes it seem that way, even for normal people like us. So you can only imagine how someone like Eli would feel.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I wanted to explore the idea of religion and God from Eli's point of view, and contrast it with the orderly views of a microbiologist who has led a very sheltered life in comparison, and has spent part of that life trying to uderstand religion in that context. Not realy germane to Oskar's and Eli's future, but intriguing to me. Kind of a contrast between a cynical pragmatist and an idealistic realist.

The next chapter, coming soon, will be a bit lighter.
