With a chador, a vampire should be able to hunt during the day.
A creature of the night, that carries the light in itself.

I'll break open the story and tell you what is there. Then, like the others that have fallen out onto the sand, I will finish with it, and the wind will take it away.

I just saw this film last night. A foreign language film about a female vampire; sounds familiar, eh? Don't expect LTROI - this is a much different story. It ostensibly takes places in a run down industrial city someplace in Iran, and the dialog is in Farsi. I was interested in this film from the reviews that I have read, and also because it was shot in Bakersfield, Cailfornia. When I was growing up (or at least supposed to be growing up), Bakersfield was one of the nearest large cities. I have been to it and through it hundreds of times. I was interested in seeing how this familiar setting could be a stand in for Iran.gattoparde59 wrote:I'm sold.dongregg wrote:Here's a longer trailer. Yes. Yes. i want to see this film.
In this the film did a good job - I got no sense that I was in Bakersfield. In the opening shots I was specifically looking for things that I could recognize, and I found none. In fact, I did find much to like at all in the first few scenes. However, after a somewhat unfocussed beginning, the storytelling sharpened up to a very fine edge before too long.
Actually, that was probably an unfair comment. The film opens in a fairly prosaic fashion and spends some time establishing most of the characters including a vintage Ford T-bird. During this time, I really found nothing to draw me in other than the art direction and some striking visuals (I'm a sucker for black and white). Soon enough however, the script does sharpen up, and you begin to get a sense of elegance in the writing and some of the actors begin to shine. Also, you get to see some scenes where the director really displays mastery of the craft of visual storytelling. Three in particular were my favorites: the scene with the mirror ball in the vampire's apartment, the scene at the power plant, and the final sequence (I guess this would really be two scenes).
I'm being vague here, because I don't want to give anything that even approaches a spoiler. Sorry if this is annoying you. If you are fan of art house films (and if you are here, then you must be ), you should put this film on your dance card.
...the story derives a lot of its appeal from its sense of despair and a darkness in which the love of Eli and Oskar seems to shine with a strange and disturbing light.
