Blowout by Brian De Palma

I enjoyed it thoroughly, and its always nice to see Nancy Allen.

My son couldn't take it and stopped watching halfway through. But, being the man I am, I toughed it out 'til the end! :D

The Whale (2022) - I had a chance to see this at an early screening. A very early screening considering it doesn't come out here until February. It really rattled me and it has stuck with me ever since seeing it. So much so that it made me want to write about it. What can I say? It hit VERY personally.

(potential spoilers ahead; I tried not to overly spoil the film but given what I'm talking about it was unavoidable)

Violent Night (2022) - A fun gore fest but very middle of the road as the screenplay never elevates the material past just being good.

Rageaholic (Gekkido) (2022) - A Japanese friend of mine just released his first feature film. He was kind enough to give me access to a screener as the film is still showing in Japan with no word of worldwide distribution. In short? It's essentially a Japanese Demolition Man...and I loved it!

Would you recommend seeing the Whale in theaters or just waiting to stream?

I would say yes to seeing it in cinemas. But I don't know. Maybe this isn't your type of film that you want to rush out and see?

I was moved by it. I was very moved by it. I think Brendan Fraser's performance is very good in the film. I think it's a magnificent companion piece to The Wrestler. Weirdly enough, much like The Wrestler, it's one of Aronofsky's more grounded films and I think he does that very well. As is shown by both The Wrestler and The Whale. I applaud The Whale for its refreshing honesty. I know some in the fat positive movement have called it "fat phobic" but I can only disagree. I think it's a very honest and very compassionate film. If the fat positive movement has an issue with it, it's because its reflecting some harsh truths they don't want to admit about themselves and sometimes art is uncomfortable in its reflection. I know this film was certainly uncomfortable for me at times given my weight issues but I still very much applauded it for having the balls to be honest in its portrayal of Charlie. Charlie is a man with a heart of gold but is also wrecked with guilt and self loathing. And that will be tough for some to sit through. It will divide audiences right down the middle. Some will think it's misery porn. Others will be moved by its humanity in his search for reconciliation with his estranged daughter. For me, it's almost Aronofsky's very own Breaking the Waves. Which also polarized opinion.

For me personally? I would say yes to seeing it in cinemas only because I'm still a cinema kid at heart and I don't want to see cinema's die thanks to streaming. On that level, go support your local cinema and don't let them die. But, and at the end of the day, it's entirely up to you.

Anyone up for watching Last Voyage of the Demeter?
Based on a chapter from Bram Stoker’s Dracula, "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" will focus on a crew on a merchant ship traveling from Carpathia to London.

Back to the unvarnished basics, I see. Looks interesting.
