New 'Earliest' Viking mention of Odin

Post by gkmoberg1 » Wed Mar 08, 2023 10:13 pm

At least one medallion from the "Vindelev Hoard", which was found in Vindelev, Denmark (central Jutland) in 2020, puts the earliest known reference to Odin back 150 years.

James Brooks wrote:“It’s one of the best executed runic inscriptions that I have ever seen,” Imer said. Runes are symbols that early tribes in northern Europe used to communicate in writing.
This is a case where the runes are pretty clear, which is amazing after all this time.

James Brooks wrote:During the Viking Age, considered to be from 793 to 1066, Norsemen known as Vikings undertook large-scale raiding, colonizing, conquest and trading throughout Europe.
Okay, these dates frame a Western European view of the Viking Age. Dates for Viking adventurism into what is now the Baltic States area and then southwards along the river systems begins earlier than this. As well, the Vikings must have not read the memo in 1066, given their further raids into York, Scotland, Wales and Ireland for a long while yet.

Okay, despite my nit-picking, this is a remarkable find. It's exciting to see more slowly come to light from the Vindelev Hoard. Cheers!

Yet another treasure trove found in Denmark. This one was found in 2021 with the contents being assessed at being from about 1250 A.D.
