Re: favorite film scenes (lots of spoilers!)

I also love all the scenes mentioned above, but one that especially moved me has not been mentioned. Right after they kiss, and it sinks in for Oskar that Eli is really going to leave, the music swells and we see Oskar going home, aimlessly rearranging his toys and being totally disengaged with anyt...

Re: I've Been Living Under a Large Flat Rock

Wolfchild, My own experience with the Film and Book is a kind of hybrid one: I saw the trailer on line, was intrigued, and because the film was not shown in my area, looked for a site where I could download it. I finally found a very poor quality version chopped up into nine or ten sections (with th...

Re: Eli's Androgyny

If we accept the premise that Eli thinks of himself as a girl (as per my original contention) why would JAL have implied this in the novel, and actually minimized the "Eli as a boy " aspects in the screenplay? What is he trying to accomplish here? The novel seems to work just fine without this adde...

Re: How was Oskar's mom a bad parent?

I can only view her the lens of my own experience as a parent. In my view she misses out, or perhaps purposefully avoids, some of the most important opportunities to be a good parent to Oskar: When he comes home with the scratch on his face, he tells an obvious lie to explain how it got there. Yvon...

Re: Eli's Androgyny

[ SPOILERS!] To Lombano; An important detail is that Oskar, when Eli asks what clothes he should take, replies 'Something of mine.' Thus Eli had several reasons to, at that moment, take something of Oskar's rather than a dress: -Oskar himself had told him to do so. -Oskar's clothes would be more lik...

Re: Eli's Androgyny

Nicely summarized. I think I agree with most of your suppositions and motives. I would only add that, after being castrated perhaps Eli no longer could/wanted to identify as male, thereby making living as a female more comfortable or "natural," and that is why Eli went for a dress rather than Oskar...

Eli's Androgyny

In the book, Lindqvist leaves some interesting clues as to how Eli views her own sexual identity : When they were in bed together and Oskar asked if she wanted to go out with him, she said, “But Oskar, I can’t. I’m not a girl.” Oskar snorted, “What do you mean? You’re a guy?!” Eli: “No, no!” Oskar: ...
