I think we are both in agreement in that we acknowledge the differences of the two movies, and the separate identities and themes explored in them. I do not see LMI as a superficial Americanized remake of LTROI but a re-telling and re-interpretation of the novel. And that is the best way to think of...

First, I'd say that we should consider Abby and Thomas not the same as Eli and Hakan. That is, the two pairs are similar, but Abby and Thomas may as well be thought of as entirely different characters that Matt Reeves "based" on Eli and Hakan. Aside: I can't bring myself to use the name "Thomas". It's just so... non-canonical. :) Matt never named him. Why should I? Reeves did name him Thomas. In the draft of the screenplay (dated May 2009, which you can find on the Web in PDF format), Abby says his name when she visits his hospital room....
