To quote Mark Kermode:

I'm cured. I'm just hanging around because I like the very profound and thoughtful community here. Don't get me wrong, Let the Right One In makes my list of top 5 books and films, but I'm not (totally) obsessed with it anymore.

There's a lot of similarities, almost all stories can be shoehorned into one or two categories so similarities are always going to be there. There's the old idea that there are no new ideas, only rehashing of old ones (very cynical). However, I don't think that LTROI parallels Peter Pan much. Oskar ...

It's not an unwritten rule; it's pragmatism. The modern viewing audience's attention deficit disorder prevents them from concentrating on anything more than two hours (apart from, it seems, computer games or music concerts).
