You've all raised some brilliant points. It does seem fitting that it would have been Oskar that brought up the subject after the events at the swimming pool. I like the idea of the second option more, although knowing what I do of Handling the undead and a little of JALs other stories, without having read them I don't think they would be able to exist in the "Eliverse" without having to trip over each other constantly. I think this is an exception to the rule that all of John Ajvide Lindqvist's stories take place in their own unique universes.
