Re: Which other mediums would you like to see the story transferred to?

A manga could be quite good. I would love to see this as a game, perhaps something like the Vanishing of Ethan Carter? Being able to walk through the areas where the book happened would be amazing (especially as 1980s Sweden is not 2020s Sweden). It would take a special studio to pull it off, though.

Re: New TV adaptation ordered by Showtime

Sounds like it's pretty much cut from whole cloth, excepting the idea of a juvenile vampire. Though it sounds like she's still aging. Might be interesting. I have a lousy track record for watching TV shows, though, so I'll probably have to wait for a full report from the group before I decide to inv...

Re: Theory about the infection

In some contemporary vampire settings vampirism becomes weaker the farther from the original vampire you are (Cain in some settings, perhaps patient zero in this case). If he was following that logic, then Oskar and the Swedish couple would have a weaker infection than Eli (though Virginia didn't se...

Re: History Lesson

As a native English speaker who does not read/speak Swedish, I appreciate the effort this takes. Thank you both.

Re: History Lesson

Great story siggdalos! I thought the last paragraph was a bit too silly given the setting, but the rest was very well done. One of the things that made the book special, to me, was the dialogue between Eli and Oskar. How they in many respects were totally normal kids, and in others Eli especially, w...

Learning Swedish with the novel

This is a half baked thought/question, but here goes. Has anyone tried to learn Swedish by reading Let the Right One In?

Re: Must we burn the novel?

I guess the best way to pose this question is to ask whether we should accept the judgment of the film adaptation: that what we see in the film represents the “fillet” of the novel and the rest should be discarded as literary offal. Do you think the film adaptation is a vast improvement over a poor...

Re: Must we burn the novel?

I have to preface this by saying I never would have read the novel had I not seen the film. The film was enchanting, and made me want more. The novel was a whole different level. There were so many things in the book that never made it to the screen ("No banaaaanas?"). Having said that, some of the ...

Re: Eli as seen by other characters

I also liked the way (in the English translation) the pronouns used to refer to Eli change between he/she/it. Especially when Oskar confronts Lacke. Really neat way to illustrate what Eli means to all the characters and how Oskar accepts Eli. Yes, the whole issue of Eli's gender is handled through ...

Re: Seasons greetings no. 12

It is so cool that JAL posts here, even if infrequently. I haven't found an author I was so taken with in many years.
