A Night of "What the...?"
By N.R. Gasan
[Author's preface: I've previously written a story that made people cry. Now (hopefully) I've written a story to make people laugh; or, at least, to make them smile. This is more along the lines of what I (and most people, I think) would want for Eli and Oskar.] |

"Oskar! Look out!"
Eli's cry was too late. Oskar and the tree were on a collision course. He already had his arms folded in front of his head which was turned toward his shoulder. He was braced for impact. With a loud thud and the popping sounds of tree limbs snapping Oskar hit the tree and fell thirty feet to the ground. |

Chapter 9: The Last Flight (alternate ending)
Oskar and Eli heard the car pull up outside. The professor came in with the newspaper. “Anything on the news yet?”
“The evening news starts in half an hour. Anything about us in the paper?” Oskar asked.
He grinned at them, “Yes actually, and it’s quite interesting.” He opened the paper to the front page and read:
RESCUED CHILD KIDNAPPED AGAIN. |

Oskar stood frozen in terror. His hand was still reaching for the cellar door but his mind was searching desperately for a means of escape. He glanced toward the front door which seemed as though it was on the other side of the world. The tall figure took a few steps in Oskar's direction and then halted. The lack of blood in Oskar's veins hindered the normal acuteness of his vision but when the figure drew closer he was able to get a clear view. |

As in my Epilogue, I feel more comfortable in a ‘real world’ scenario, rather than a supernatural one. I’m one of those naïve nerds who have complete faith in the ability of the Scientific Method and the resulting scientific advances to be a major factor in the solution of all of mankind’s problems. (I have sought therapy for this condition, to no avail) For the sake of continuity, JAL’s universe is interpreted by me as ‘reality;’ consequently, all of the phenomena he describes are accepted as such and will be fully explainable (eventually) by science. |
