PART TWO
Chapter 2: On Edge
The Hideout
Oskar and Eli leave the courtyard and move across the irregular terrain of the nature preserve. As they move through the dark forest, they tune their eyes and ears for other presences. The few words they speak are so hushed that only they can hear them.
SET ME AS A SEAL UPON YOUR HEART
Set me as a seal upon your heart,
As a seal upon your arm:
For love is strong as death;
Jealousy is cruel as the grave:
The coals thereof are coals of fire.

Eli stood at the speaker’s table and put the glasses on her nose.
Oskar asked:
“Eli, why did you put the glasses? You have a 500% vision!”
“Yes. But speaker on the scientific conference should have the glasses, otherwise nobody will take him seriously”.
“So, our theme is - Dragons, Zombies and Vampires: similarities and differences.
Oskar looked at the calendar.
- Oh, man! We forgot to renew our vampire license.
Eli stretched lazily on the couch.
- Well, not a problem. Tomorrow we’ll go and renew.
Said - done. At Thursday midnight Eli and Oskar were already sitting in the waiting room of the regional office for registration vampire licenses. Pretty secretary invited them into the office:
- Come on, Mr. Gekko is ready to receive you.
They went inside. At the table sat a middle aged man (vampire, of course) and lazily polished nails with a nail file. Seeing entered, he smiled and made a welcoming inviting gesture:
From WTI Facebook.
This story has been a way for me to spend quality time with Eli as her friendship with Oskar unfolds. I hope it brings you the happiness it brought me.
- Hey, Oskar!
- Hm…
- Let’s go fishing!
- Fishing? But…
- Yes… We don’t eat fish. But fishing - it’s funny! And to all – just for a change, because you watch too much TV. And I’m afraid that you will adhere to the couch.
- Ok! So, we need a fishing tackle, some bait, what else?
- No, we need only some bait. And a camera.
- But how will we catch a fish without a tackle? With bare hands?
- Yes! I know a secret. The main thing is the bait. And to remember not to turn off the TV.
- Eli… It seems to me that you fooled me head.
- No! Let’s go for bait.
- Ok then.

The Verdict
The boy was starting to get seriously worried. The girl was still sleeping.
At least, that’s what he hoped she was doing. It could be pretty hard to tell; she doesn’t breathe when she sleeps, and she’s isn’t warm-bodied. He supposed the only way he’d ever be able to tell she’s really dead is by the smell, only, she can get pretty ripe when she goes too long between showers, too, and it’d been, what, three or four days since Frankenbeans’ trailer? The only remaining possibility is that she’d gone into a really long sleep, the kind that sounded an awful lot like hibernation from the way she described it.
